Ronchini Gallery London, will present The Uncanny, curated by critically acclaimed independent curator and writer James Putnam from 16 January – 9 February 2013. Featuring new works by two young artists, Adeline de Monseignat and Berndnaut Smidle, The Uncanny draws on each artist’s relationship with their materials and the ways in which they create a sense of unease for the viewer.
Adeline de Monseignat lives and works in London. She creates installations and sculptures working with organic and tactile materials (fur, fabric, glass, sand) and more recently with motors. She refers to her creations as ‘creaptures’ as they are somewhere in between creatures and sculptures. She has a penchant for using fur as her working medium, which she often encases in glass. Its tactile quality elicits in the spectator an unfulfilled desire to touch it. Some of her works are reminiscent of the Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim’s ‘Dejeuner en Fourrure’, 1936 – a fur covered cup, saucer and spoon which is arguably one of the most uncanny art objects ever made.
Amsterdam based artist, Berndnaut Smilde produces striking images of ‘real’ Nimbus clouds suspended within empty rooms using a fog machine and carefully adjusts the temperature and humidity to produce clouds just long enough to be photographed. There is a unique ephemeral aspect to the work where the photograph captures a very brief moment before the cloud quickly dissipates and disappears again as mysteriously as it was formed. He chooses surreal spaces, such as empty churches or galleries, to stage his photographs. His choice of lighting and viewing aspect enables him to create a convincing illusion of the cloud’s physicality. In this new series of photographs specially commissioned by the Ronchini Gallery, Smilde has selected evocative interior locations.
