Emerging Cuban Artists from Havana

Beginning July 10, M.Y. Art Prospects presents "Esprito de Habana," an exhibition of spirited, energetic works from emerging artists living in Havana. This group show is organized by the Florida-based SALA (Society for Advanced Latin American Art) foundation.

For many decades, the rich culture of Cuba has nurtured and inspired countless writers, poets, artists and musicians. With this exhibition, M.Y. Art Prospects proudly makes its contribution to the ongoing efforts of the international arts community to bring a broader audience to the vibrant but underrepresented Cuban art scene.

All six artists in this exhibition were born after 1972 and received solid academic training in such art institutions as ISA (Art Superior Institute) in Havana. Five of these artists -- Fabian Martinez Barrero, Humberto Planas Camue, Adrian Monzon Cutino, Romy Fuentes de Leon, Michel Acosta Perez -- not only know each other, but often show their work together. The 6th participant in the exhibition, Jose Farinas, is a Cuban-Jewish artist whose surrealistic images create a world all their own.

Using traditional paintbrush, fine-point pen, and computer mouse, each exhibiting artist speaks eloquently through his or her art. Their influences range from Old Masters and Modernism to Pop Art and Photo-realism. Whether depicting ruined colonial buildings, simple street scenes, packaged consumer products, or fantastic morphing creatures, these works reflect both the deeply personal sensitivities of the artists and the complex and unique environment in which they live and work.

Fabian Martinez Barrero has been exhibited at Florida Atlantic University and Old School Square Museum, FL, and Jose Farinas was exhibited at the Jewish Community Center of Pittsburgh, PA and the Mizel Museum of Judaica, CO. For all the other artists, this exhibition is their first significant exposure in the United States.

The SALA foundation, organizer and supporter of this New York exhibition, is committed to promoting the arts and culture of Latin American nations, particularly Cuba. Dr. Jay Hyman, a native of New York, has been the head of the foundation since 1998 and frequently travels to Cuba with humanitarian and educational missions.
