Thomas Helbig, Victor Man and Helmut Stallaerts: what the oeuvre of these 3 artists do have in common is their search for the expression of a vague feeling of discomfort. Oscar Jespers is considered one of the most important modernist sculptors in Belgium. The exhibition focuses on the sculptures from the period 1917-1930 and shows them in dialogue with the work of a number of like-minded friends and contemporaries.
Survay
Thomas Helbig, Victor Man and Helmut Stallaerts
The exhibition brings together the work of three artists from three European countries: Thomas Helbig (b. 1967, Germany), Victor Man (b.1974, Romania) and Helmut Stallaerts (b. 1982, Belgium). These artists do not belong to the same generation as the age difference between Helbig and Stallaerts is 15 years. What the works of these three artists do have in common, however, is their search for the expression of a vague feeling of discomfort.
This makes their oeuvre not easily interpretable but it does testify, in a unique and singular way, of a great imagination and a search for a visual language that is ever expanding in complexity.
This exhibition will combine new and older work and is both the result and the continuation of the research conducted in the context of the making accessible of the Collection Wilfried & Yannicke Cooreman in 2009.

Oscar Jespers
Sculptures
Oscar Jespers (1887 - 1970) is considered one of the most important modernist sculptors in Belgium. It was mainly during the period 1920-1930 that his work reached a creative peak. Jespers processed modernist influences of international artists such as Brancusi and Zadkine into a personal visual language.
The exhibition at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens focuses on the work from the period 1917-1930 and shows Jespers’s sculptures in dialogue with the work of a number of like-minded friends and contemporaries (such as Constant Permeke, Edgard Tytgat, Floris Jespers and Hippolyte Daeye).
There will also be a new catalogue available, made by José Boyens.
