Carl Andre: Mass & Matter Discussion
This exhibition brings together a group of sculptures and poems by one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Along with his contemporaries Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris and Sol LeWitt, Carl Andre is a leading artist associated with the emergence of Minimalism in the United States in the mid-1960s.
Andre is famous for his sculptures made of ordinary industrial materials which are arranged directly on the floor in simple linear arrangements or grids. By reducing sculpture to its most basic elements and re-orientating it from the vertical to the horizontal plane, Andre helped to redefine the possibilities of sculpture for a whole generation of artists.
This exhibition, Andre’s first in a UK public gallery for over ten years, brings together eight sculptures made between 1967 and 1983, alongside a collection of his typed poems from the same period.
Carl Andre: Mass & Matter will tour to mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art from 14 June until 19 September 2013.
A programme of events will run alongside the exhibition, engaging adults and children with the artworks, materials and the artist.

Rosa Barba: Subject to Constant Change
1 Feb - 6 May 2013
Free admission
In a unique collaboration with Cornerhouse, Manchester, we present the most comprehensive solo presentation to date by celebrated Italian-German visual artist Rosa Barba, Subject to Constant Change. Both exhibition spaces will, during similar time periods, each present a distinct part of a newly commissioned film work, designed to be exhibited in different cinematic and sculptural formats in each of the two galleries. To accompany her exhibition at Turner Contemporary, Rosa Barba has made a selection of Turner works from the Tate collection.
Victoria Pomery, Director of Turner Contemporary, added:
‘We are very excited to be working with Rosa Barba and Cornerhouse on this new commission. The series of little-known, wonderful perspective drawings by JMW Turner perfectly complement Rosa’s new commission.’
Subject to Constant Change explores the wide range of Barba’s works, with its enquiry into the physical characteristics of film including celluloid, light, projector and sound, or the structure of cinematic narrative, and its occasionally improbable people, places or stories.

Turner's Perspective: Selected by Rosa Barba
1 Feb - 6 May 2013
Free admission
This exhibition presents a selection of fascinating and unexpected drawings by JMW Turner investigating the science of perspective.
From 1807–1837 Turner was the Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy. He gave a series of lectures about perspective during these years, which were famous for being at once fascinating and extremely difficult to follow. As one critic said: ‘Excellent as are Mr Turner’s lectures, in other respects there is an embarrassment in his manner approaching almost to unintelligibility’.
The drawings were made as visual aids, held up during the lectures to illustrate the complex theories Turner struggled to explain. To accompany her exhibition Subject to Constant Change, Rosa Barba has made a selection of these drawings from the Tate collection. Struck by their modern appearance, at once stark and complex, Barba was intrigued by the drawings’ explorations of points of view, colour, and reflection, all key interests in her own recent work. The exhibition gives insight into Barba’s practice and the structures underlying Turner’s masterful paintings.
