Asian American Women Artists Alliance's Annual Group Exhibition
The Asian American Women Artists Alliance (AAWAA) is pleased to present Accumulative Efforts, a group show of twenty-seven artists at the Phoenix Gallery, 568 Broadway, Suite 607, New York City.
Being multi-ethnic American women, the artists share many common opportunities and hurdles, aspirations and expectations. However, each works with vigilance to develop her unique artistic vision as an individual, using and revealing her heritage as much or as little as she chooses. In this exhibit, these choices add up to a range of expression in diverse forms and media. Viewers will be aesthetically and intellectually provoked, prodded, and stirred as they encounter paintings and drawings in Western and Eastern traditions, photography, and multimedia works.
Works in the exhibit will include paintings by Akiko Bresler, Paula DeLuccia, Suejin Jo, Patty Kim, Sonomi Kobayashi, Yan Kong, Numyi Lee, Doris J. Lettau, Yi Jun Sun, Sung Sook Setton, Shirley Pu Wills, and Ella Yang; drawings and collages by Fannie Lee, Helen Lin and Zhang Yu; mixed media works by Jacie Lee Almira, Yvette Castro, Amy Cheng, Ellen Hsiao, Ran Hwang, Joo Hyun Kang, Diana Schmertz and Hee Sung Yang; wood cut prints by Xing Song; and photography by Chie Nishio and Anna Song. In the Project Room, Miyoung Song will present a video and light installation, which will explore female identity and gender in virtual space
The exhibition will open on July 15 and run through July 31, 2003. On Friday, July 18, at the opening reception AAWAA will present a traditional Balinese dance by Ayu Armini and jazz music by Yasco Ikegami. The performances will be at 7PM. Admission is free.
The online catalog will be launched on July 18, 2003, at http://www.aawaa.org. The catalog will document the artwork in the exhibition, and also provide a literary forum for Asian-American women. This year's contributions include an introduction by Jacie Lee Almira, a short story by Luo Meng, and a non-fictional essay by Anna Song.
