comunicato stampa

Howard House is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Sean Duffy in the East Gallery and introducing Los Angeles based artist Cole Case in the West Gallery.

Sean Duffy presents 'Sorry Entertainer' a new series of sculptures and paintings based on his poetic and earnest deconstruction of the Grunge music phenomenon, it's instruments, fashion and fans. The packaging of popular music is the starting point for Duffy's sculptures and paintings. At the center of Grunge was a nonconformist 'slacker' stance that Duffy sources through materials like duct tape and an ad-hoc assembly method. The sculptures and paintings expose sources and attitudes of Grunge with a Dada-like presentation and each piece offers many entry levels into the culture of this particular movement.

Sean Duffy received his Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Irvine in 1992. This summer is work will be included in 'Black Belt' at the Studio Museum, Harlem, NY, curated by Christine Kim. In 2002 his work was shown in '21 Paintings from L.A.' at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum at Cal State, San Bernadino, CA, curated by James Gobel.

Cole Case presents 'Recent Paintings', a series of oil and alkyd on panel paintings that draw from the modern history of the natural landscape and how individual artists have translated it in art. Specifically for this show, Case investigates the earthwork of Robert Smithson, 'Spiral Getty' and Michael Heizer, 'Double Negative' from the 1970's. Each generation interprets the natural landscape and in the 70's Smithson and Heizer were at the forefront of the movement that literally changed the physical forms of the earth. Case draws from the vocabulary of the age-old medium of painting and uses colors that alter the source image to extreme unnatural combinations, emphasizing the simulacrum. Case further exposes this with a fine bead of oil alkyd that create a delicate lattice either invoking a map grid or latitude/longitude lines.

Cole Case received his BFA from Art Center in 1999 and a BA in English from Stanford in 1982. His paintings were shown in 2002 at the Luckman Gallery, Cal State University, Los Angeles curated by Adam Ross.
