comunicato stampa

Tony Matelli presents painstaking details in his true to life sculptures in a combination of horror and humor.

New York based artist Tony Matelli (f. 1971) is a prominent figure in contemporary art. His works are characterized by painstaking detail and depict recognizable motifs, such as the human body, monkeys, bouquets of flowers, and various consume products. The hyper-realistic sculptures are presented in surprising and at times almost absurd compositions. These compositions give food for thought whilst triggering your imagination.

Matelli’s sculptures are famous for straddling the boundary between a feeling of disquiet and humor, and often raise questions such as how we define ourselves as human beings and what constitutes a meaningful relationship.

The vanitas motif
In his peculiar combination of horror and humor, Matelli circles around the vanitas motif and symbols of the mortality of man. Hence, the exhibition title, A HUMAN ECHO, is also a reminder that, regardless of man’s present-day cultural development, the existential conditions for humanity are the same now as they have always been.

The exhibition Tony Matelli – A HUMAN ECHO is Matelli’s most comprehensive to date and presents his artistic production of the past 15 years. This exhibition has been realized in close collaboration with the artist and ARoS, Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.

Opening: Friday 22 February at 19:00.
