comunicato stampa

Vibrating chairs are slowly moving and turning randomly through the space. They seem to search and reject each other. When a visitor passes by or sits down, the chairs hesitate and then carefully try out different patterns. The patterns are not designed; it is a self-organizing system where new compositions and new behaviors arise spontaneously through the duration of the installation.

Living objects, kinetic architecture and physical interaction are characteristics of the installations by Lawrence Malstaf. His responsive environments generate theatrical situations involving the visitor as an essential presence in their dramaturgy. Ina complex play with unstable order, chance and change, his machines displayemotion, doubt and other human qualities.

The work of Lawrence Malstaf (°1972, Bruges, Belgium) is situated on the borderlinebetween the visual and the theatrical. He develops installation and performance artwith a strong focus on movement, coincidence, order and chaos, and immersivesensorial rooms for individual visitors. He also creates larger mobile environmentsdealing with space and orientation, often using the visitor as a co-actor. His projectsinvolve advanced technology as a point of departure or inspiration and as a meansfor activating installations.

Lawrence Malstaf has received several international awards in the field of art andnew technology. He is also well known as an innovative scenographer in the danceand theater world.

In 2008 he receives the Witteveen + Bos - prize for Art + Technology (NL), in 2009the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica (A) and in 2010 the Excellence Prize atThe 13th Japan Media Arts Festival in Tokyo (JP). In 2011 his project ‘Pavilion’ isselected for iMinds Art&D-call (B). To develop ‘Pavilion’, he collaborates with theGhent University Multimedia Lab.

Enrique Radigales
12 Meters Landscape + Ruins

Production of the piece developed in two stages: In phase 1, a 3,1GHz iMac was used for editing images found online with the search keyword “landscape”. After processing the images into a 12 metres composition, an EPSOM Stylus Pro 11880 plotter was used to print the ensemble on 310g Hahnemühle paper. In phase 2, the surface of the paper was painted with acrylic paint.

150 different online images and graphics with pixel sizes in excess of 1024x800 dpi were randomly combined in the programming of the work’s HTML version. A clock counts the time the images take to download (in seconds), depending on the available bandwidth. The software keeps track of maximum and minimum download times and shows them over periods of one year. Online images were selected according to three criteria: nouns, adjectives, and prefixes.
