In Sydney Licht's new still life paintings, mundane objects and organic forms are placed together so that the depiction of the ordinary becomes the unusual.
In Sydney Licht's new still life paintings, mundane objects and organic
forms are placed together so that the depiction of the ordinary becomes the
unusual. Sometimes these items are partially obscured, enabling the viewer
to perceive the unexpected in things we often overlook. Heightened color
affinities between the vegetation and the synthetic objects call into
question the relationship between artificial and real. By introducing the
decorative patterns of tablecloths or wallpaper into these works, Licht
further challenges the way in which we interpret the visual rhythms in the
world around us.
