We are please to announce the exhibition /Obsessive Worlds - Works on
Paper/ with Leipzig- and Berlin-based artists Peter Feiler, Sebastian
Gögel, Tobias Hild, and Christian Weihrauch.
The exhibition brings together four approaches to drawing which in their
different thematic focus and formal characteristic are united in the
obsessive generation of their view of the world.
The unconventional crayon and ink drawings of Peter Feiler (b. 1981,
Halle/Saale, Germany; lives and works in Berlin) attract the observer in
their exuberant, delicate execution in epic pictorial worlds of
countless strands, in orgiastic scenes and highly complex world systems.
With relentless directness, the abyss of human being unfolds:
Aggression, torture, voracity, violation, rape, agony. The perplexing
multiplicity of this fragmentary seizable netting is put into
perspective by finespun humor.
With a sometimes very idiosyncratic sense of humor, Sebastian Gögel (b.
1978 Sonneberg/Thuringia, Germany; lives and works in Leipzig) creates
ambivalent representations of a universal struggle toward form. His
pencil drawings "draw the observer into a giddying journey through a
panoptic labyrinth of the human psyche. One reflexively halts to study
these drastic scenarios, bloodthirsty ambushes and grimacing
protagonists, fascinated by their ruthless precision and terrible
beauty" (Oliver Kossack).
Similarly humorous, the pencil and crayon drawings of Tobias Hild (b.
1975 Herborn/Hesse, Germany; lives and works in Leipzig) are
particularly enigmatic and ambivalent in which "everyday disasters,
tribulations, fears and nightmares, but also poetic and pleasant
moments" are expressed. "The disconcerting power of his images lies not
only in his stories, his combination of narrative components, but also
in his painting style, his expressive gestures and his obvious passion
for creating effects, structures and forms through color" (Dr. Jeannette
Stoschek).
In the multifaceted crayon drawings of Christian Weihrauch (b. 1966
Zella-Mehlis/Thuringia; lives and works in Leipzig) mundane universes
fuse with fabulous and phantasmagorial ones by employing peculiarly
subjective metaphors and referencing the history of art and culture. The
precise organisation of details within distinctive pictorial
compositions is in balance with an excessively intuitive lust for
storytelling by using a sensitive and lavish coloration.
