Il concept della mostra di Thomas Zipp

Con il complesso titolo dell’opera ideata per Palazzo Rossini, Thomas Zipp evidenzia da subito due livelli di interpretazione. Da una parte prende spunto dal testo di una canzone del 1970 del musicista inglese David Bowie, The Width of a Circle, dall’altra da un fenomeno relativo agli studi sull’isteria. Nel suo testo Bowie fa riferimento a parabole e temi tratti dall’opera Così parlò Zarathustra di Friedrich Nietzsche per affrontare nello specifico il tema del rapporto sessuale con il suo “demone”, la droga.
Nel contempo, però, il progetto di Thomas Zipp fa riferimento all’espressione francese “l’arc de cercle”, nata nel famoso istituto di igiene mentale alla Salpêtrière di Parigi nella seconda metà del XIX secolo, in concomitanza con la documentazione enciclopedica di queste “malattie”.
Per l’artista è particolarmente interessante l’invenzione e la ricerca relativa al quadro clinico dell’isteria per come venne affrontata dai medici della Salpêtrière, in particolare da Jean- Martin Charcot (1825-1893). In primo piano per Zipp c’è la trasposizione di tale invenzione su un piano “quasi artistico”, paragonabile a ciò che avviene per Bowie in relazione al suo irrecusabile “rapporto sessuale” con la droga. L’installazione di Thomas Zipp intende rappresentare una versione in scala ridotta di un istituto di ricerca. Questa tuttavia non si concentra esclusivamente sull’isteria ma affronta anche la dualità (schizofrenia) di una persona, in questo caso dell’artista, che è medico e al contempo paziente. “L’istituto di ricerca” progettato da Zipp è suddiviso in otto ambienti che rappresentano anche gli spazi di una fittizia clinica: accoglienza, ufficio del direttore, biblioteca, ambulatorio, dormitorio, auditorio, area per lo svago e corridoio, nei quali Thomas Zipp vuole realizzare la sua idea di clinica virulenta.

KAI 10 I Arthena Foundation

L’installazione “Comparative Investigation about the Disposition of the Width of a Circle” viene promossa dalla fondazione non-profit Arthena Foundation, istituita dalla collezionista e imprenditrice Monika Schnetkamp. Lo spazio per l’arte dell’Arthena Foundation nel Mediahafen di Düsseldorf è stato inaugurato nell’autunno del 2008 con la prima esposizione, No Illusions. Come piattaforma sperimentale per l’arte contemporanea KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation si pone l’obbiettivo di essere una sorta di laboratorio culturale nel quale giovani artisti vengono sostenuti e promossi . La fondazione mette al centro della sua attività il sostegno ai processi creativi e alla genesi di opere. Nelle tre o quattro mostre collettive organizzate annualmente dall’ KAI 10 I Arthena Foundation vengono affrontati e discussi differenti complessi tematici sotto il profilo artistico, sociale e mediale. Nonostante l’attenzione sia rivolta principalmente ai giovani artisti della scena contemporanea, vengono considerati anche nomi già affermati. Dal settembre del 2008 nel Mediahafen di Düsseldorf sono già stati ospitati più di 80 artisti, affermati a livello internazionale come Mike Kelley, Rachel Harrison, Heimo Zobering ma principalmente esponenti della nuova generazione come Anna Parkina, Andrew Gilbert, Björn Dahlem, Markus Selg o Natalie Czech.

Il lavoro enciclopedico di Thomas Zipp

L’artista Thomas Zipp, residente a Berlino, unisce nel suo lavoro una vasta gamma di tecniche e strumenti. È un pittore, un disegnatore, crea oggetti tridimensionali e sculture, lavora con la fotografia e realizza video. Adopera anche la tecnica del collage e dell’assemblaggio, ma il suo lavoro si basa principalmente sull’arte installativa. Le sue esposizioni si basano su ampi allestimenti nei quali vengono integrate le singole opere come quadri, disegni o lavori fotografici. L’artista generalmente attribuisce alle sue mostre un aforisma che segna l’allestimento tematico dello spazio. Definito anche “ psiconauta dell’arte”, nei suoi progetti e nelle sue installazioni Zipp indaga l’inconscio in tutte le sue forme. La sua “estetica cupa” esplora gli effetti di droghe come le suggestioni della musica Heavy Metal, i territori di confine di filosofia e religione così come le zone recondite della psichiatria e della psicopatologia e i loro legami con la realtà sociale. L’installazione a Palazzo Rossini si propone di trasmettere la complessità delle opere e delle presentazioni di Thomas Zipp, che per estensione hanno dimensioni pressoché enciclopediche. L’interesse di Zipp per la ricerca su pensieri, sentimenti e percezioni dell’essere umano nonché la sua ricerca nell’ambito della psichiatria e della psicologia conferiscono al suo lavoro un carattere universale, che va ben oltre i limiti dell’immaginario mondo dell’arte.

The exhibition concept of Thomas Zipp

The complex title of Thomas Zipp’s proposal for his project in the Palazzo Rossini, touches upon two levels of meaning. On the one hand, he refers to the lyrics of ‘The Width of a Circle’ from 1970 by the English musician, David Bowie; on the other, to the phenomenon of research onto hysteria. Bowie, himself, referred in his lyrics to various parables and themes in Friedrich Nietzsche’s ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’, whereby he was mainly interested in his sexual relationship with his ‘Devil’, drugs.

At the same time, Thomas Zipp’s project references the French term, ‘l’arc de cercle’, how it was coined in the second half of the 19th century in the famous hospital for the insane, ‘Salpêtrière’, in Paris, and where an encyclopaedic documentation of this ‘disease’ originated.

Particularly interesting for the artist is the invention of and research into the pronounced symptoms of hysteria as undertaken by doctors at ‘Salpêtrière’, especially Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893). For Zipp, the transformation of such an invention to a ‘quasi-artistic’ level is foregrounded, comparable to the irrefutable ‘sexual relationship’ to drugs, as exemplified in the case of David Bowie. In Thomas Zipp’s installation, a version of a research institute is to be shown that will not solely deal with hysteria but also with the duality in one person (schizophrenia) - in this case, the person of the artist, who will be doctor and patient simultaneously. – The ‘research institute’ developed by Zipp encompasses eight parts, which concurrently stand for the rooms of a fictional psychiatric clinic: reception, director’s office, library, treatment room, bedroom, auditorium, anger room and hallway, in which the artist wants to realise his idea of the virulent clinic.
KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation

The whole staging of ‘Comparative Investigation about the Disposition of the Width of a Circle’ by Thomas Zipp is financed by the non-profit KAI 10 I Arthena Foundation, founded by the collector and business woman, Monika Schnetkamp. The foundation opened its exhibition space, KAI 10, in Düsseldorf’s Media Harbour in autumn 2008 with its first exhibition, ‘No Illusions’. Conceived as a platform for contemporary art, the institution aims to be a type of intellectual workshop which supports and sponsors young artists in the realisation of their projects. The foundation thereby sets the support of artistic processes and the genesis of works at the core of its activities. Three or four group exhibitions are shown yearly at KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation, whose various thematic complexes and their artistic, social, and medial points of contact are presented for discussion. Although the focus is on the young, contemporary scene, well known positions are also incorporated. Since September 2008, over 80 artists, including such established internationals as Mike Kelley, Rachel Harrison and Heimo Zobernig, and especially the younger generation such as Anna Parkina, Goshka Macuga, Björn Dahlem, Markus Selg, or Natalie Czech, have been guests here in Düsseldorf’s Media Harbour.
The encyclopaedic work of Thomas Zipp

The Berlin-based artist, Thomas Zipp, incorporates a range of different methods and media in his work. He is a painter and drawer, makes three-dimensional objects and sculptures, and works with photography and film. He also employs collage and assemblage techniques, although his main focus is on installation works. His exhibitions are based on spatially large presentations, in which single works such as paintings, drawings or photographs are incorporated. The artist usually gives his exhibitions a motto, which provides him with a theme-based focus for his ensembles.

Zipp, once described as the ‘psychonaut of art’, explores the unconscious in all its forms in his projects and installations. His ‘dark aesthetic’ includes the effects of drugs, the suggestion of heavy metal music, the boundaries of philosophy and religion as well as the hidden areas of psychiatry and psychotherapy and their connections to social reality.

The exhibition, ‘Comparative Investigation about the Disposition of the Width of a Circle’, in Palazzo Rossini seeks to convey the complex character of the works and presentations by Thomas Zipp, the range of which has almost encyclopaedic dimensions. Zipp’s research into the fields of psychology, psychoanalysis and natural sciences, as well as his interest in the pictorial exploration of people’s thoughts, feelings and perceptions, impart a universal approach to his work, which goes far beyond the limitations of the seemingly imaginary world of art.
