Through a rereading of modernist sculpture, design and the accomplishments of minimalism, the meticulously crafted artwork of Corey McCorkle conveys transformative experience. For the exhibition Pressing (organised by objectif_exhibitions in Antwerp, 2002) McCorkle rubbed an almost invisible razor-sharp motif on the wall. Untitled (Findhorn Pastoral) was based on a decorative wing-like ornament at the gates that give entrance to the gardens of the Findhorn Community.
This utopian garden community was founded in 1962 in Northern Scotland above the arctic- circle. The legacy of Findhorn, connecting ideas about deep-ecology, communal reciprocity between plants and humans and spiritually inspired design is an important source for the reflection of the artist. During a recent stay in Belgium, the artist investigated Art Nouveau and its unique combination of architecture, industrial design and craft. As a style that draws on nature at it's most abstract and supernatural, Art Nouveau also marks a unique point in the history of Belgium and modernism in general, and provides a relevant environmental context for McCorkle's work. This project will further explore ideas about nature as a practical and theoretical catalyst to turn materials and techniques into social agents, coupled with the new age connection between vegetation and the paranormal.

For objectif_exhibitions the artist created a completely new group of site-specific interventions including: a selection of suspended plants; a wall incision homage to Gordon Matta-Clark's Office Baroque (Antwerp 1977); and a greenhouse structure in the skylight window, negotiating 'inside' and 'outside' in an ambiguous way. The design of these different elements is extremely studied and, as Art Nouveau, and shows itself an intellectual hybrid, capable of marrying disparate elements - through style.

Corey McCorkle (°1969, La Crosse, USA, lives and works in New York). This is his first solo-exhibition in Belgium. Recently McCorkle's work has been shown at Maccarone Inc. Gallery New York; Stephen Friedman Gallery, London; Triple Candie, New York; Mary Goldman Gallery, Los Angeles; objectif, Antwerp; MurrayGuy Gallery New York; The Renaissance Society, Chicago; Arnolfini Museum, Bristol; The Drawing Center New York.

Objectif_exhibitions will publish a book on McCorkle's work with an essay by Philippe Pirotte.
