PARISIAN LAUNDRY's annual group exhibition Summertime in Paris opens June 8 and runs until August 3. This year's edition is included in the Association of Contemporary Art Gallery's Extreme Painting program. Summertime in Paris features represented artist Jaime Angelopoulos alongside invited artists Celia Perrin Sidarous, Fabienne Lasserre, Derrick Piens, Olivia Boudreau and Paul Hardy.
The work assembled for Summertime in Paris walks the viewer through a multiplicity of practices. The artists and their artworks contribute to the gallery's interest in and support of work that is hand-built and champions an absolute attention to materiality. These works evoke the studio and the energy behind their visual language. This multifarious gathering represents the quintessential group show, invited artists communicating and converging with one another and viewers.
Celia Perrin Sidarous's photographic series assembles prosaic objects into poetic gestures that punctuate the movement between three-dimensional form and two-dimensional image found throughout the gallery. Fabienne Lasserre's work also signals the fluidity of boundaries between object and image by residing in between categories of painting and sculpture. Jaime Angelopoulos's evocative abstract objects hint at a figuration that is strangely familiar, these sculptures are complemented by Derrick Piens's three-dimensional constructions that reflect an interest in the breakdown of form through geometric compositions. Paul Hardy's paintings investigate both the material properties of paint and gesture as compositional form, providing the viewer with a range of depth, pattern and movement upon the flat surface. Finally, Olivia Boudreau's subtle single channel video projection, Le Bain, is presented in The Bunker space. With the screen acting as an object in space that provides a direct relationship to the body, Boudreau's work rounds out the exhibition as an exquisite moving tableau.
Celia Perrin Sidarous is currently completing her MFA from Concordia University and was an artist in residence at the Banff Center for the Arts in 2010. Toronto-based artists Jaime Angelopoulos and Derrick Piens hold master's degrees from York University and Southern Methodist University respectively, they were recently included in the exhibition Trans/Form at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto. Paul Hardy is a recent graduate of the master's program at Concordia University and is currently an artist in residence at Gibraltar Point Toronto. It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our wonderful colleague Dacil Kurzweg. Dacil has been a key figure in the development of the gallery, spearheading such projects as the Berlin Project, Rick Leong's publication and participation in art fairs such as Volta NY and Basel and Untitled Miami. She has collaborated with the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art to present a solo exhibition of Valérie Blass and oversaw the revamp of the PARISIAN LAUNDRY website. We wish Dacil all the best in her new venture in Paris.
