VI FINAL EXHIBITIONS IN SERIES OF COMMISSIONS OF NEW ART IN SCOTLAND PAUL CARTER | CHAD McCAIL

VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE, The Fruitmarket Gallery s flagship series of exhibitions that commissions and publishes new art in Scotland culminates this autumn with the work of Edinburgh-based artists Paul Carter and Chad McCail.

Paul Carter will show new work, in an exhibition called Edge of Darkness. Three installations, Source, Shrine and Burial Chamber, re-imagine Scotland as uncharted territory still to be explored by would-be adventurers. The works mimic the language of old-fashioned museum displays, bringing together objects and artefacts to illustrate forgotten, or illusory, geographical conquests.

Of the exhibition, the artist says that he has constructed three museum dioramas, depicting archaeological finds from a future exploration to the heart of Scotland .

Throughout his career, Carter has taken on the role of the everyman, adopting the language of the self-styled amateur including guerilla tactics, radio broadcasts and survival skills. He uses everyday items and popular knowledge, setting up practical models to reclaim ownership of ideals or beliefs lost to official forces such as governments or global corporate and scientific enterprise. He has beamed messages into outer space, recognized the face of Christ and Che Guevara in an accidental paint spill, and constructed a mobile allotment in case of a nuclear disaster. His work involves the audience in its search for answers via practical, home-made experiments.

Chad McCail s exhibition, Life is driven by the desire for pleasure, is the culmination of a three-year project. Seven sequences of digital prints depict cycles of life, work and pleasure-seeking in intricatelydetailed fictional worlds that bear resemblance to our own. Zombies serve and despise Wealthy Parasites whilst children learn to curb their natural exuberance and to recognize the natural hierarchies of modern society within McCail s episodic narrative.

McCail says he wants to present two visions: ''One where people have a harmonious and dynamic understanding of their desires and another, where desire is inhibited and bound up with violence in the interests of a wealthy elite. I m asking viewers to recognise themselves in both worlds, to choose which one they d rather develop.''

McCail transports the medium of drawing into the realm of public service signage, conveying social and political messages within a completely realised vision of a simplified class structure. His work is drawn freehand in gouache and ink before being digitized on the computer to produce large-format prints. McCail s style steers close to the comic book and graphic novel yet draws on eastern philosophy, psychoanalysis and the Judeo-Christian ethic to frame complex utopian and dystopian themes.

An MFA graduate of Glasgow School of Art in 1995, Carter s solo exhibitions include Icaro Menippus, Chapter, Cardiff, 2002;The Modern Babylon, Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, 1998; Wheels of Steel, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, 1998. In 1996, he completed a six-month residency at Willem II Fabric, Den Bosch,The Netherlands. Carter teaches sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art.

McCail completed a Fine Art Degree at Goldsmith s College, University of London, in 1989.
