"Continuer" by Walter Swennen encompasses the last 16 years of his painting, a period during which the artist expanded his repertoire of formal and expressive solutions in a quite remarkable fashion. "Tell It To My Heart" shows a very broad selection of works of art that Julie Ault has collected over the years, as a result of her interests and investigations, as well as her different friendships and collaborations.

WALTER SWENNEN
Continuer
Curated by Miguel Wandschneider
Greatly admired in his own country, particularly by other artists, Walter Swennen (Brussels, 1946) is a painter who has yet to be picked up by the radars of the international art world. Since the early 1980s, when he called time on his activity as a poet in order to take up painting as his preferred means of expression, Walter Swennen has been constructing a unique oeuvre that immediately surprises us through his constant rejection of a unifying style. This exhibition encompasses the last sixteen years of his painting, a period during which the artist expanded his repertoire of formal and expressive solutions in a quite remarkable fashion. This has only been made possible by his ever keener awareness of the specific problems of painting, his ever greater mastery of the different means of expression and his deep-rooted sense of individual and creative freedom. In 1988, he wrote: “Truth lies in the words. It has once been said: ‘as stupid as a painter’. Stupidity is the name of the real with which the thinking is in dispute. Painting has to do with the real. So I keep myself busy with stupidities.”
This exhibition is organised in collaboration with the WIELS Contemporary Art centre, in Brussels.

Tell It To My Heart
Collected by Julie Ault
Curated by Julie Ault, Martin Beck, Nikola Dietrich, Heinz Peter Knes, Jason Simon, Danh Võ e Scott Cameron Weaver
Julie Ault was one of the driving forces behind Group Material (1979-1996), an artists’ collective (Doug Ashford, Tim Rollins and Felix Gonzalez-Torres, among others, all belonged to it) which explored the relationship between art, activism and politics. Her multifaceted practice as an artist, curator and writer has frequently been rooted in different forms of collaboration and an intense dialogue with various artists, giving rise to a number of significant exhibitions and publications. Tell It To My Heart shows a very broad selection of works of art that Julie Ault has collected over the years, as a result of her interests and investigations, as well as her different friendships and collaborations. Her “collection” includes works by such artists as Martin Beck, James Benning, Sister Corita, Roni Horn, Robert Kinmont, Andres Serrano, Nancy Spero, Wolfgang Tillmans, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Danh Vo, among so many others. This exhibition is accompanied by an extensive programme of films and videos, conceived by Jason Simon.
