The works are tempered by a regard for the spontaneous human drive to represent the world. These questions, the perception of what we see as representation and how that becomes abstract, are essential to Hollingsworth's works. Gestural and minimalist and simultaneously non-gestural and non-minimalist, Hollingsworth's art defies the simple categories and taxonomies of contemporary critical language.
Chac Mool Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by
Dennis Hollingsworth. The artist will be present at the opening, on
Friday October 10th, from 6:00 to 9:00 in the evening and the show will
run through November 15th, 2003. In his second exhibition at Chac Mool
Gallery, Hollingsworth continues to explore the gestural abstraction
tradition.
His focus lies in simultaneously hiding, and exposing and overlapping the
paint. Wet paint and wet brush, screed or palette knife, his tools are
key factors in determining the concept of his work. In his own words,
Hollingsworth 'knocks the paint in a big slatherfest and stomps all around
until it's done,' dragging, flinging, squeezing, throwing, and dropping
paint onto the canvas. The works are about paint as material for its own
sake. Rectilinear and grounded, these works are energetic with color and
form, yet maintain their purity, never giving way to self-conscious mud or
color mixture.
The abstract inventiveness of these works lie in the manner in which the
lines and colors of these paintings enter into a new language, a new
territory, a space which confronts the representational with the abstract.
