Family + City. Painting in reverse perspective, Grodesky's work investigates alternative ways of seeing. The further away an object or figure stands, the larger it appears on canvas. This process flips the position of the viewer, reevaluates traditional composition and allows us to become physically closer to Grodesky's subject.
Family + City
LFL Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by New York-based artist Scott Grodesky. The exhibition, titled "Family + City" will run from October 9th to November 8th, 2003.
Painting in reverse perspective, Grodesky's work investigates alternative ways of seeing. The further away an object or figure stands, the larger it appears on canvas. This process flips the position of the viewer, reevaluates traditional composition and allows us to become physically closer to Grodesky's subject.
The forms and colors that emerge in Grodesky's work are not predetermined and graphite lines are neither reversed nor erased. By permitting the work's own history of construction to show through, each painting exhibits its natural evolution. Using a translucent rather than saturated painting technique, the white of the canvas rises to the surface. Grodesky provides us with a thin image which treats his subjects (his family and his city) with a gentle but slightly dark touch.
Grodesky lives and works in Queens, New York. He has exhibited at Art and Public in Geneva, Mario Diacono Gallery, PS1, The Venice Biennale, Andrea Rosen Gallery and the Jason Rubell Gallery. This is Scott's second solo exhibition in New York, and his first exhibition with LFL Gallery.
