ARLES IN BLACK

What meaning does black and white photography have today? Is it fiction, poetry, abstraction or pure nostalgia? The 2013 Rencontres is radically dedicated to black and white photography, presenting entirely new creations from renowned artists, along with discoveries, treasures from the past and, of course, a few exceptions in colour. This year this top photography rendezvous that brings the world to Arles is a must-see phase of the 2013 Marseille-Provence, European Capital of Culture.


THEM

Hiroshi Sugimoto, Revolution: the Japanese master of black and white presents his meditative works. Couleurs de l'ombre: Sugimoto's first work in colour (Polaroids), with Hermès Éditeur.
Sergio Larrain: the world premiere of the highly awaited retrospective of the Chilean photographer's work.
Guy Bourdin: the pictorial radicalism of Bourdin's black and white photos provides the first signs of what would lead him to become the great fashion photographer in colour.
Alfredo Jaar overturns our certitudes about the truth of photos.
John Stezaker plays with cinema photos, creating a strange, uncomfortable universe full of humour.
Viviane Sassen: proposes surreal and disconcerting work that is always fascinating.
Wolfgang Tillmans: questions whether the world can be looked at with a 'fresh' gaze in an era swamped with images. Presented in co-production with the LUMA Foundation.


MYSELF

Gilbert Garcin: a retrospective of Garcin's famous photomontages.
Jean-Michel Fauquet: objects and photographic prints painted by hand and arranged in such a way as to create an abstract, profound and metaphysical universe.
Arno Rafael Minkkinen: for 40 years, Minkkinen has being searching for pure beauty by photographing his naked body in the setting of magnificent landscapes.
Miguel Angel Rojas: for Rojas, photography was a means of expressing his homosexuality in the conservative society of 1970s' Colombia.
Pieter Hugo, highlights the contradiction of racial distinctions.
Michel Vanden Eeckhoudt: a perspicacious and penetrating gaze at the world.

Mars by Xavier Barral: a stunning vision of the planet based on NASA photos.
John Davies, famous for his British landscapes and his work in France.
Antoine Gonin: abstract, graphic and poetic landscape compositions.
Transition, Social Landscape: a collective photographic mission, on a vast scale, investigating the territory of South Africa.
With South African: Pieter Hugo, Santu Mofokeng, Zanele Muholi, Cedric Nunn, Jo Ractliffe, Thabiso Sekgala;
French: Philippe Chancel, Thibaut Cuisset, Raphaël Dallaporta, Patrick Tourneboeuf, Alain Willaume ;
and Belgian: Harry Gruyaert.
Antony Cairns : partially developed, solarised photos of London, which are then dipped again in developer, before being printed on pre-coated aluminium sheets.
Jean-Louis Courtinat: thirty years of commitment to people marginalised by society.
Cristina De Middel, winner of the 2012 Photo Folio Review, De Middel documents an impossible dream: the African space programme.
Stéphane Couturier and Frédéric Nauczyciel: the Festival d'Avignon.

ALBUM

Jacques Henri Lartigue: the 1920s, years Lartigue spent with his first wife Bibi, form a whole in his life as in his art.
Pierre Jamet and his friend Dina Vierny, the muse of sculptor Maillol, set out on the adventure of France's youth hostel movement during the Popular Front period.
Faded Out: Raynal Pellicer's collection of cropped and retouched photographs of Hollywood personalities, published between 1910 and 1970 in American newspapers.
The Studios Fouad in Beirut and Van-Leo in Cairo present a selection of handcoloured portraits.
Album Beauty: Erik Kessels' collection of photo albums depict family histories and the staging of said histories. Kessels also presents a spectacular installation of all the
photos posted online in 24 Hours.
2013 Book Awards: more than 400 books are available to be perused.

2013 DISCOVERY AWARD

The Discovery Award is given to a photographer or an artist using photography, whose work has recently been discovered or deserves to be so. This year's nominators Zeina Arida, director of the Arab Image Foundation, Beirut; Diane Dufour, director of Le BAL, Paris; Alison Nordström, curator-at-large of George Eastman House, Rochester; Brett Rogers, director of the Photographer's Gallery, London, and Olga Sviblova, director of the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow, propose 10 exhibitions by Nikolai Bakharev, Craig J. Barber, Martin Becka, Lauren Bon, Yasmine Eid-Sabbagh and Rozenn Quéré, Halil, Marcela Paniak, Alison Rossiter, Alexandre Slussarev and Clare Strand.
The Discovery Award receives support from the LUMA Foundation

ENSP : Bernd & Hilla Becher, A Journey into the World's Data. 2013 Graduates' Exhibition, A Particular Attention.
Clicks and Classes: a nationwide programme aimed at increasing young people's awareness of photography, with SCÉRÉN [CNDP-CRDP] and HSBC France.
SFR Young Talents presents the winners of its 2013 competition.
Olympus launches a photographic conversation between 3 ENSP students, Sarah Moon, Stanley Greene and Jean-Christian Bourcart, and gives carte blanche to Klavdij Sluban.
Marion Gronier, winner of the 2012 BMW arts residency at the Musée Nicéphore-Niépce.
Paulo Nozolino applies his deep blacks to the colours of lavender, with support from L'Occitane en Provence.
The Méjan Association: Gordon Parks, Daido Moriyama, Thibaut Cuisset, Alessandro Imbriaco, Robin Hammond, Samer Mohdad, Keep Your Eye on the Wall, Giuseppe Penone and Lee Ufan.
Christian Lacroix transforms the interiors of the Abbaye de Montmajour with works from the Centre International de Recherche sur le Verre et les Arts Plastiques in Marseille.
LUMA Foundation: To the Moon via the Beach / Archives and The Library is on Fire.
Friche la Belle de Mai, Marseille: 1000 works from the Centre National des Arts Plastiques chosen by Patrick Tosani.
