comunicato stampa

Tomas Downes recently said to us that he wasn't interested in his work being ‘read’ as the sum of a list of ingredients; that he wanted a transmission of meaning over time. This is a good place to start as this enduring conveyance is achieved through a synthesis of elements that comprise Tomas' practice.

Most visible is the material palette; it's articulate, industrial, strong. He uses shallow depth of field photography, steel, aluminium, tinted Perspex filters, casts and found objects. His work has an over-riding steely tonal quality.
The works are built around images. those images are found and re-photographed or constructed through assemblage, documented and then processed, creating layer upon layer of removal or obscurity from the starting point.
He makes his works through a choreography of decisions, materials and processes: orchestrating his elements.
Within his practice Tomas' allows studio accidents, fabricators mis-haps and other factors to enter into and ruminate after the planning of a work.
His work is rooted in his thinking around image production and understanding and while there is a tendency towards opacity, it never slips into obfuscated territory.
He practices at a pace with a timeline in mind in which works develop along it, sometimes referring to elements further back and often leading the way for the direction to shift permanently.

Tomas Downes (b. 1986, Birmingham, based in London) graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design (2008) and the Royal Academy of Arts (2011). Recent and forthcoming solo and group shows include; V22, London; Peles Empire, London; Brand New Gallery, Milan (all 2013); Galerie Chez Valentin, Paris, FR; 'Young British Art II', dienstgebaude, Zurich, CH (all 2012); 'Bloomberg New Contemporaries' (2011).
