Annette Weisser
Make yourself available

With Make Yourself Available the Heidelberger Kunstverein presents the most extensive institutional solo exhibition by Annette Weisser in Germany to date, and displays current works within a display conceived by the artist. The exhibit is a reflection of Weisser's childhood in the 1980s in a southern German province. A drawing from 1983 (when Weisser was 15-years-old) forms the point of departure for a new series of woodcuts looking at concrete and abstract feelings of angst experienced in this decade: acid rain, nuclear overkill, Chernobyl and what sociologist Ulrich Beck termed “the risk society” represented big issues in Germany and formed the dark undercurrent of a materially carefree childhood and youth.

Another recurring theme in Annette Weisser's work is the relationship between the individual and society, which she examines in the video work “Karlas Lied” (“Karla's Song”), completed in 2012 in Los Angeles, and which she explores in more depth in the series of collages “The Good, the Bad and the Boring” (2008-2010).

For her exploration of history Weisser chooses a hermetical and private entry point in order to show the futility and, at the same time, necessity of an exploration undertaken at such a personal level. Her art develops itself through her own attempts at understanding this subject. In the end, her work also relates to the question of what it means to “make yourself available” and the moral responsibilities of “making a difference”.

As part of the exhibition series “Einzelausstellung: Nicht alleine” (“Solo Exhibition: Not Alone”), which invites artists to exhibit their work with references to pieces and objects that inspire them, Annette Weisser decided to integrate her aunt Anneliese Weisser's entire private library into the show.

Annette Weisser (* 1968 in Villingen/Schwarzwald) lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles. Since 2007 she has taught at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena (Graduate Art). Weisser studied at the University of the Arts Bremen and the Academy for Media Cologne. She is represented by the gallery RECEPTION in Berlin.

Studio #8: Maja Linke
1 Fragment: 943 Fragen (1 Fragment: 943 questions)

The exhibition “Fragment 1: 943 Fragen” by German artist Maja Linke is the last part of the exhibition series “Im Gespräch – Acht Untersuchungen zum subjektiven Wissen”.

Linke examines the power of language – specifically hurtful or violent speech. Her work is made up of questions, which are used as a means of interrogating the categories of author and addressee. Can questions have a critical potential that prevents violent exclusions? Does an answer mark the end of a conversation, or rather, is it the practice of questioning that keeps conversation alive?

Foyer: Jörg Baier
Rätsel der Wiederkehr (Enigmatic return)

On two display tables Jörg Baier arranges a parade of worn-out objects. In his collages objects dissolve into two-dimensionality. They are photographed and photocopied before Baier further fragments them by cutting the images out. Newly assembled, they bear the traces of decay. Display tables no longer preserve objects and their details, but form new enigmatic landscapes.
