La Bricarde housing estate, Marseille

Following the 3 Cité des Curiosités artist residency at La Bricarde housing estate, Logirem, the Logirem Foundation and Marseille-Provence 2013’s Euro-Mediterranean Ateliers are proud to present TIME by gethan&myles. This participative project has three parts – the sculpture Fin, the short film L’arrêt and the publication Time Machine.

gethan&myles completed TIME as part of a six-month artist residency at La Bricarde housing estate, during which they worked with local residents and non-profit organisations. The project explores the notion of time, which the artists consider has a special quality in these zones suspended between mountains and sea, where people seem to be waiting for something that is both imminent and indefinable.

Fin is a transparent luminescent sculpture, the shadows of which mark the passage of time. Like the fin of a fish emerging from the water, its triangular form protrudes from the pavement. Because it is gold, it contrasts with the grey and beige urban environment. Within this giant sundial, a circle composed of 366 dates of birth pays tribute to La Bricarde’s residents – and celebrates 2012, a leap year.

L’arrêt is an experimental documentary about suspense, indecision and the choreography of fear. It was filmed in the Parc National des Calanques with a group of young adults from La Bricarde, and focuses on the uncertain passage from childhood to adulthood. It features five young adults who throw themselves off vertiginous cliffs into the Mediterranean Sea. The highlight of the film is not the plot or the dramatic ending, but the moments preceding these events – the combination of bravery and discomfort, the transition from aggressive looks to overly casual smiles, the waves of tension and doubt, and the battle to overcome these feelings.

The stories told in the book Time Machine explore the enigmatic nature of time and identity at La Bricarde housing estate. All the neighbourhood photos in the book are by gethan&myles and 14- and 15-year-old students from the Collège Henri Barnier who took part in photography workshops. The texts are based on local residents’ stories about personal objects, sounds and flavours that have the power to take them back in time – like Proust’s madeleine. 366 numbered copies of this stand-alone publication will be produced. Because the pages are uncut, readers will have to slit them to discover the book’s content – an irreversible action that reflects life itself.

The Anglo-Irish duo gethan&myles create contextual pieces. An essential component of their work is participation, inspired by the different regions they work in and the people they meet. By modifying or interacting with constructed spaces (whether architectural or mental), they seek to question and transform stereotypes. They have already received several commissions from regional authorities in the United Kingdom, and are supported by institutions like London's Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and Barbican Centre.

La Bricarde housing estate
La Bricarde housing estate is located in Marseille’s 15th arrondissement, and is identified as a zone urbaine sensible (sensitive urban zone). It has over 2,000 residents. With non-profit organisations, businesses and economic activities, it is a lively neighbourhood that supports the development of cultural projects – including the Cité des Curiosités programme. As part of this initiative, the housing estate has welcomed resident artists since 2008. These artists have leave behind permanent traces of themselves in their artwork, installed in public space.

The Logirem corporate foundation aims to improve access to culture and develop social ties between residents of the company’s houses and flats alongside employees. Over the last fifteen years, it has supported over 500 projects. For Marseille-Provence 2013, it is supporting four projects, including this Euro-Mediterranean Atelier.

The Euro-Mediterranean Ateliers
As an ambitious platform supporting contemporary creation throughout the Marseille-Provence region, the Euro-Mediterranean Ateliers are one of Marseille-Provence 2013's founding projects. Companies, organisations and public institutions will host artist residencies in all disciplines, creating ties between artists and organisations not usually involved in contemporary creation.

Executive producer: Sextant et Plus
As one of the associations based at La Friche la Belle de Mai, Sextant et Plus develops production and distribution systems for contemporary artwork. This includes exhibitions, residencies, publications and outreach, on the local, international, public and private levels.
