The purpose of this project is to trace the history of labour in Soviet and post-Soviet art from industrial to non-material forms from the 1960’s through to the first decade of this century and to show how attitudes towards work and representation of labour have changed in the development of new artists. Ultimately, by looking retrospectively at the subject of labour, we can define the different types of artistic patterns of artists in modern day society.
Works from the Soviet period, which are linked with the tradition of the ‘severe style’ are displayed in the historical section of the exhibition, along with mock ups and a demo board which were created by artists from the Zhukovsky Central Aerodynamic Institute at various periods in time. They are compared with works from modern artists who tackle industrial and manufacturing themes in modern times. Meanwhile the 1970’s and 1980’s will be represented in the context of photo essays on Communist ‘subbotniks’ (voluntary community working Saturdays) taken from the photo archives of the Tretyakov Gallery.
A programme will be running during the exhibition which will deal with the problem of finding work for creative individuals which will organised by Alexander Melamid, a modernist artist from the Institute of Re-training. The programme, which is co-organised by the Institute of Problems of Modern Art, will invite artists to re-train as domestic plumbers under the supervision of a qualified professional.
A special section of the exhibition will be dedicated to the problems that artists face of quitting the artistic profession. It will also tackle the problem that professionals such as surgeons, physicists and biologists have of breaking into it. This section will show how the ‘artists’ and ‘non-artists’ work together to evaluate new methods of developing art.
