DEPART Foundation è lieta di presentare la mostra ANAMERICANA a cura di Vincenzo de Bellis, ospitata presso l’American Academy in Rome, visitabile fino al 14 novembre 2013 con ingresso gratuito.

La mostra comprende oltre quaranta opere che accostano linguaggi diversi tra loro, come pittura, fotografia, grafica, scultura, installazione e video. Tutti i lavori esposti, alcuni dei quali di grandi dimensioni, reinterpretano il significato della parola “Americana”, giocando sull’idea patriottica e positiva che questa definizione comune ha sempre portato con sé.

Le opere, provenienti dalla collezione della Fondazione DEPART e quasi tutte di recente acquisizione, sono di artisti eterogenei fra loro per generazione, poetica e ricerca stilistica: Uri Aran, Darren Bader, Aaron Bobrow, Joe Bradley, Nick Darmstaedter, Tom Burr, Louis Eisner, Roe Ethridge, Sam Falls, Mark Flood, Erik Frydenborg, Elias Hansen, John Henderson, Mike Kelley, Brendan Lynch, Takeshi Murata, Carter Mull, Oscar Murillo, Trevor Paglen, Mitzi Pederson, Seth Price, Rob Pruitt, Jon Rafman, Stephen G. Rhodes, Amanda Ross-Ho, Sterling Ruby, Edward Ruscha, Lucien Smith, Valerie Snobeck, Frances Stark, Mateo Tannatt e Oscar Tuazon.

Il termine “Americana” si riferisce solitamente a manufatti che presentano caratteristiche tipiche del patrimonio culturale statunitense, legate alla storia, alla geografia e al folclore del Paese. Molti sono i materiali e gli oggetti a cui viene attribuito questo aggettivo: dipinti, stampe e disegni, targhe o veicoli interi, oggetti per la casa, utensili e armi, statue e così via, dove patriottismo e nostalgia sono i temi predominanti. Il termine, inoltre, viene utilizzato per distinguere generi artistici e musicali, per descrivere il tema di un museo, di una collezione o dei beni in vendita.

“Il titolo stesso della mostra, ANAMERICANA, presenta una duplice lettura: se infatti da un lato An può essere letto in chiave grammaticale come articolo indeterminativo della lingua inglese, rappresentando pertanto una non specifica tipologia del sostantivo Americana, dall’altro, letto come un prefisso privativo, esso rilegge il senso stesso della parola in chiave di negazione” – dice Vincenzo de Bellis – “I lavori esposti mostrano un’attitudine degli artisti contemporanei a lavorare su temi cari alla storia, alle tradizioni dell’arte e della società degli Stati Uniti, ma allo stesso tempo sembrano prenderne le distanze, sottolineando gli aspetti critici e controversi di un Paese straordinariamente complesso”.

La mostra si articola in tutti gli spazi interni ed esterni dell’American Academy, occupando l’ingresso, le gallerie, il criptoportico e il cortile dell’istituzione. L’accostamento delle opere è fatto sulla base di assonanze formali e concettuali tra i lavori. Il catalogo della mostra, edito da Nero in lingua inglese, contiene testi di Vincenzo de Bellis, Peter Benson Miller, Fionn Meade, Jordan Wolfson e un ricco apparato iconografico delle opere esposte e della mostra.

DEPART Foundation is pleased to present the exhibition ANAMERICANA curated by Vincenzo de Bellis and hosted by the American Academy in Rome. The show will be on view until 14 November 2013.

The exhibition features more than forty works created by thirty-two artists who live and work in the United States and who use different media, such as painting, photography, graphics, sculpture, installation and video. The exhibition reinterprets the meaning of the word “Americana”, playing with the ideas of patriotism and positivism, concepts that have always been associated with its definition, while offering a more ambiguous and complex meaning.

All of the pieces in the exhibition come from the DEPART Foundation collection and most of them are recent acquisitions. The show will bring together the work of artists from different generations who pursue various poetic and stylistic expressions: Uri Aran, Darren Bader, Aaron Bobrow, Joe Bradley, Nick Darmstaedter, Tom Burr, Louis Eisner, Roe Ethridge, Sam Falls, Mark Flood, Elias Hansen, John Henderson, Mike Kelley, Brendan Lynch, Takeshi Murata, Carter Mull, Oscar Murillo, Mitzi Pederson, Trevor Paglen, Seth Price, Rob Pruitt, Jon Rafman, Stephen G. The term “Americana” refers to manufactured objects, or a set of artifacts, that belong or relate to the cultural heritage, history, geography and folklore of the United States. Many types of materials fall under the definition of “Americana”: paintings, prints and drawings, license plates or entire vehicles, household items, utensils and weapons, statues, and so on. Patriotism and nostalgia are predominant themes. Often the term is used to describe the subject of a museum or collection, or property for sale.
"The title of the exhibition itself presents a twofold interpretation; on the one hand 'An' could be read grammatically as the indefinite article that in this sense represents a non-specific typology of the noun “Americana”, or, read as a privative prefix, the sense of the word would change to become a negation of itself" - Vincenzo de Bellis explains - "The works on display, reveal a tendency of contemporary artists to relate their works to history as well as to artistic and social traditions of the United States, indicating a more complex interpretation as well as a kind of distancing that underlines the critical and controversial aspects of a diverse and extraordinary country".

The exhibition is displayed throughout the American Academy in Rome and the pieces are arranged according to their formal and conceptual similarities.
A catalogue published by NERO will accompany the exhibition. The publication includes a text by Vincenzo de Bellis, Peter Benson Miller, Fionn Meade, Jordan Wolfson, and photographs of the exhibited work.
