CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICE IN SCOTLAND
Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November, 2003
A two-day symposium on contemporary art practice is set to provide the most
comprehensive overview of training opportunities and support structures
currently available to young artists in Scotland.
Presented by The Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh on 1 and 2 November, the
symposium entitled SCOTLAND NOW Â CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICE IN SCOTLAND will
gather together representatives from major funding, training and publishing
organizations, alongside leading Scottish artists and curators at a time
when international attention is focused on Scotland as one of the world's
key centres for contemporary art.
Keynote speakers will include forum chair Kay Pallister, co-curator of
Zenomap, Scotland's first independent exhibition at the 50th Venice Biennale
2003 and international artists from Scotland Graham Fagen, Victoria Morton
and Ross Sinclair whose work has been the subject of commissions by The
Fruitmarket Gallery.
Key programme elements will include introduction of a new Code of Practice
for the Visual Arts by The Artists' Information Company Director of
Programmes Susan Jones and Glasgow's Cultural Enterprise Office Information
Officer Fiona Pilgrim, and presentation of the Scottish Arts Council's
recently launched artists' audit by Visual Arts Officer Wendy Law.
The symposium marks the culmination of The Fruitmarket Gallery's Visions For
The Future exhibition series that has, since 1999, commissioned and
published new art by twelve artists living and working in Scotland.
Exhibiting artists have included Martin Boyce, winner of a 2003 Paul Hamlyn
Foundation Award for Artists and the 2003 Archibald Campbell and Harley WS
Photography Prize, Graham Fagen winner of the 2000 Archibald Campbell and
Harley WS Photography Prize and Rosalind Nashashibi winner of the 2003
Beck's Futures Prize.
The sixth and final exhibition in the series, Visions For The Future VI, is
showing the work of Edinburgh-based artists Paul Carter and Chad McCail
until 29 November, 2003.
SCOTLAND NOW Â CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICE IN SCOTLAND features a one-day
forum on Saturday 1st November, from 10.30am-5pm at The Fruitmarket Gallery,
for which tickets are £10 (adult) and £5 concession, including lunch.
As part of the programme, two free seminars aimed at providing professional
development advice for recent graduates will be held on Sunday 2nd November,
from 1pm-5pm at photography gallery, Stills, 23 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh.
Director of The Fruitmarket Gallery, Fiona Bradley, said the symposium was a
timely event for the arts sector to examine the adequacy of support networks
for artists to develop their careers in Scotland in light of increasing
international attention. ¼This is an important gathering of opinion and
expertise to assess whether Scotland is providing an optimum environment for
artists to embark on, and maintain, careers in the visual arts in Scotland.'
Limited places are available for both dates and advance booking is
essential.
Bookings can be made at The Fruitmarket Gallery Bookshop or by contacting
the gallery by phone on 0131 225 2383.
