A Constructed World
Spring Workshop, Hong Kong
The Social Contract, the new work of the two artists, is an invitation to sign an Agreement. Methodologies that bring attention to diverse modes of artistic practice are their usual work.
Spring Workshop presents The Social Contract, a work by A Constructed World. This work invites the audience to sign a legally binding Participation and Confidentiality Agreement in order to enter the gallery. In doing so, the viewer becomes part of a temporary community of silent participants, agreeing not to disclose what they have seen.
A Constructed World work with methodologies that bring attention to diverse modes of artistic practice. They are well known for their lengthy performances which include up to twenty performers presenting conversation, philosophical texts, music, singing and dancing, incorporating high levels of specialisation and not-knowing as a shared space. In their ongoing project, Explaining contemporary art to live eels, they invite art specialists to speak to live eels that are later released back into the water. Based in Paris, A Constructed World is the collaborative project of Australian artists Geoff Lowe and Jacqueline Riva. They have presented major survey exhibitions at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, The University of Melbourne (2012), Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2007) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (1996). They have also had solo exhibitions at National Centre for Editioned Art and Image (Cneai), Chatou (2007) and CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art, Bordeaux (2008), where they made a year-long project of four exhibitions and performances. Their next expansive exhibition will be at Museum Villa Croce, Genova (2014). A Constructed World have made performances for art centres including Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers (2013), FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims (2012); Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm (2011) and Paola Pivi's GRRR JAMMING SQUEEK, Sculpture International Rotterdam (2011). The Social Contract is presented as part of the ongoing Moderation(s) program initiated by Spring Workshop and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. Begun in August 2012 and running through August 2014, Moderation(s) sets out to create time and space for a specific kind of artistic production where each project embraces long-term development and discussion. The project brings together more than fifty international artists, curators and writers participating in an ongoing program of contemporary discourse and production. Within this framework, Heman Chong, Singaporean artist, curator and writer, was invited to coordinate the program, including a conference, three exhibitions, three residencies and a book of short stories. Speaking about the project, Heman Chong proposes "to make 'soft' the practices of both artist and curator, so that one becomes easily soluble in the other, while retaining their unique forms and patterns of working. The participants are encouraged to indulge in the pleasures of exchanging knowledge, stories and tools without any pressure to collaborate."
Serving as the Moderation(s) bibliography, Bibliotheek is a physical collection of books suggested by the project's participants. This ever-expanding common library of inspiration is open to the public throughout the project at both Spring and Witte de With. (A list of titles can be found here.)
This autumn, Spring will also welcome artists-in-residence Ming Wong and Aslı Çavuşoğlu.
Spring is a non-profit art space committed to an international cross-disciplinary program of artist and curatorial residencies, exhibitions, music, film and talks.
