A Thirty Year Retrospective revisits work by photographer Anthony Friedkin. The show will feature selections from over three decades of photographic essays.
A THIRTY YEAR RETROSPECTIVE OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTHONY FRIEDKIN
Timekeeper: A Thirty Year Retrospective revisits work by celebrated Los
Angeles based photographer Anthony Friedkin in an exhibition at the Stephen
Cohen Gallery from November 13 through December 31, 2003. The show will
feature selections from over three decades of photographic essays. A new
monograph is being published in conjunction with the exhibition and will be
available at the gallery. The gallery is located at 7358 Beverly Boulevard
and is open Tuesday-Saturday 11-5 and by appointment.
The exhibit will draw from several significant bodies of work including: The
Gay Essay, The Ocean-Surfing Series, The Beverly Hills Essay, the Hollywood
Essay, and New York Brothels. The work spans Friedkin's career, and combines
images from his varied experiences as a fine art photographer and a film
unit still photographer in Hollywood.
Anthony Friedkin served in the late 1960¹s and early 1970¹s as a
correspondent for Magnum Photos. His work has been widely published, with
credits including Rolling Stone, Zoom, Time, and Newsweek. He is the
recipient of numerous awards and honors, most notably the National Endowment
for the Arts Fellowship and a special endorsement by the Eastman Kodak
Company for his work in Hollywood. He was the first photographer selected by
the Los Angeles Library to inaugurate a special program documenting the
diverse culture of Los Angeles.
His photographs are in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, The New
York Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Los
Angeles County Museum of Art, and George Eastman House.
Anthony Friedkin is a native of Los Angeles, California and has worked
extensively in Western and Eastern Europe, Japan, Mexico, and New York City.
He is known for his exceptional black and white silver gelatin prints, which
he makes himself illuminating his unique vision.
