DUT Fine Art and Jewellery Design Graduates

Kznsa Gallery, Durban

Group Exhibition

sintesi del comunicato stampa

This exhibition of selected work showcases the range of work produced by Fine Art and Jewellery Design Diploma and B Tech degree students during 2013. Traditionally the exhibition of selected graduate work has been held in the departmental studios; however, this year it was decided to provide the students with the opportunity tof exhibiting in a professional and public space. This initiative was very generously supported by Corporate Affairs and the Office of the Executive Dean, Dr K Netshiombo. The work of Fine Art students produced under the guidance of Andries Botha, Greg Streak, Jan Jordaan, Hendrik Stroebel, Themba Shibase and John Roome demonstrates a range, individuality and craft that have been the hallmark of the department for a number of decades. This is the result of a focus on the development of each student as a creative individual, using a teaching philosophy based on the integration of theory and practice and practice led research that is a characteristic of a University of Technology. The work reflects on a range of issues present in contemporary South Africa including class relationships, homelessness, personal identity, our relationship to nature, the city and the rural/urban cultural divide. In a large charcoal on paper triptych titled Pillars, B Tech student Mhlonishwa Chiliza explores the relationship between the working and ruling classes colonialism through the juxtaposition of images of vulnerability and power.
