Premise of exhibition: In Betty Edward's famed book, Drawing On the Right
Side of the Brain, the writer attempts an exploration into the nature and
systemic impulses inherent in the creative process. She determines through
extensive research that people who are typically "right-brain" learn by
doing; they are creative, inventive, abstract and random in their thinking
whereas a typically "left-brain" person learns by listening and reading;
they are concrete and logical in their thinking. Occasionally, a person
falls squarely into both these categories, and meditates in two directions
simultaneously.
This exhibition focuses on the anomalous artist/writer. Each of the artists
included in this exhibition mediates a keenly visual sensibility with a
literary or linguistic interest, demonstrating the duality of their thought
process as both random and concrete. The show will explore questions such as
"What constitutes a random narrative, and where does it go and why?" and,
"What happens when something concrete like a book is transformed, or
abstracted into a work of art?"
Opening reception: Saturday, November 15th, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
The exhibition has been organized by Los Angeles-based artist and writer Eve
Wood.
