The Matthew Travis Gallery is pleased to announce its final show for
2003, featureing four very distinct artists: Phyllis Flax, Andis
Applewhite and Maggi Battalino, and New York-based Richard Fox. These
artists work in very different ways, yet each creates works of lasting
beauty that stimulate and please the senses.
Phyllis Flax is a fixture on the Houston art scene. Flax's recent work
has been strongly influenced by the forests of Montana. Her images
reveal the play of light and shadow on the primeval woodlands of this
vast state. Her works have been seen at many juried competitions,
including the Visual Arts Alliance Show (1997 and Third Place Award
2000) and the Assistance League Celebrates Texas Art (2000). She has
also exhibited at the Spring Branch Medical Center Art Show (2001) and
the Midtown Visions Cultural Arts Tour (2001). Flax studied at the
Glassell School of Art.
A native New Yorker, Richard Fox has traveled extensively in Europe,
especially in Italy, France, England, Spain, and the Low Countries.
French and Italian artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
in particular have inspired him to depict the mores and sights of
today-a living history in paint. He reapplies compositional structures
and techniques he has seen in works of the past to suit a modern
representational mode of expression. His paintings are represented in
the collection of the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, Brooklyn,
New York, and in private collections in New York, San Francisco, Paris,
and Luxembourg.
Andis Applewhite sees screen printing as opening creative possibilities
beyond the traditional techniques of painting. Her works are the
result of multiple printings of different colors. With each successive
printing, she experiences a moment of decision, a moment when she must
search within herself to find the creative strength to meet the
challenge of combining colors to create a successful work of art. Texas
native Applewhite is a graphic designer and principal with Andis
Applewhite Design. Her work has been seen in several juried shows
including The Big Show at the Lawndale Art and Performance Center,
Houston, Texas, in 1994, 1997, and 2002.
A distinguished working visual artist, Maggi Battalino has a studio in
the downtown arts district of Houston, Texas. Chosen by METRO, Cultural
Arts Council of Houston and HOK architectural firm to design the
prestigious Museum District Station for Light Rail in Houston,
Battalino adds this highly visible collaborative Public Art Commission
to an impressive list of accomplishments. She has been invited to
exhibit in numerous national and international solo and group
exhibitions. Battalino has been chosen to be part of the highly
respected Assistance League Celebrates Texas Art exhibition for three
consecutive years.
