Blombos tot Rooibos. This Afrikaans title with its somewhat comical sound refers to the ancestral background shared by these two young artists.
The exhibition Blombos tot Rooibos brings together the works of two young South-African artists living in Paris and having studied at the National School of Art of Paris-Cergy. It is part of the official program of the “Saison Croisée” the cross cultural exchange between France and South Africa throughout the year 2013.
The title of the exhibition bridges two well known features of South-African culture: the archeological site of Blombos, a breakthrough for human culture where a 100 000 years old painting kit has been excavated recently, the earliest evidence of sapiens art in colour. The South African tea, Rooibos, grown by the Sans for ages.
This Afrikaans title with its somewhat comical sound refers to the ancestral background shared by these two young artists. The set of objects carefully arranged by Bianca Bondi strive to catch fleeting impressions. Her use of raw materials, wood, coal, soapstone, connects them to enigmatic gestures of ancient rituals. Claudia Tennant’s paintings, combinations of items, geological shapes and abstract patterns on moonscapes, convoke both the history of painting and an odd symbolic vocabulary freely inspired by her native country.
Blombos tot Rooibos is a dialogue in a common language, that of two artists from the same generation, having grown up in South Africa and who currently live in France.
