comunicato stampa

From the 21st of November 2003 until the 24th of January 2004, the first ever solo exhibition in Austria of Japanese photographer Noguchi Rika will be shown by the Galerie der Stadt Schwaz. Born in 1971 in Saitama, Japan, the artist will be showing three photo-series from recent years, Seeing Birds (1997), A Prime (1997) and New Land (1999).

It's formally strict composed works that are put together into series by Noguchi Rika, such as deserted landscapes, the landing of a helicopter, anonymous architecture. No dramatic scenes or spectacular occurrences, but simple moments that reveal the interest in another view onto the world. Excelled colourfulness by means of computer (Ruff), majestic viewpoints onto the fantastic achievements of civilisation(Gursky), as well as emptied spaces of prominent architecture (Candida Höfer), are not part of Noguchi Rika's way of procedure. Nevertheless her works do show reference points to the German exponents of conceptual photography. Textual ideas are picked out as a central theme through the method of documentary photography. The title of the series New Land (1999) not only points to a geographic term, but also to questions of social development. The pictures of labour situations, of heavy machinery and dull landscapes, are dominated by the monumental effect of the sky and by low positioned horizon lines in particular. Interestingly, the locations and situations were not photographed in Japan. The pictures show landscapes and industrial areas around Amsterdam. It's the simple moments, freed of too much meaning, that Noguchi is interested in, moments that she doesn't find in her closer – culturally too close – surroundings.
