COAL Art and Environment Prize

Fourteen projects by artists involved in environmental issuesnominated for different editions of the COAL Art and Environment Prize: Ackroyd & Harvey, Damien Chivialle, Olivier Darné, Nicolas Floc’h, Hanna Husberg, Laura McLean, Nabil Ahmed, Benedetta Panisson, Rosa Barba, Christopher Draeger & Heidrun Holzfeind, Marian Tubbs, Drew Denny, Ivana Adaime Makac, Matthew Moore, Liliana Motta, Lucy + Jorge Orta, Zhao Renhui, Anna Katharina Scheidegger, Laurent Tixador, The Migrant Ecologies Project. The exhibition entitled Adapting in the Anthropocene presents prjects by several of the artists nominated for different editions of the COAL Art and Environment Prize, with a commonaim to capture major societal and contemporary environmental issues and participate in the emergence of a new culture of nature and ecology. Every year, by awarding the COAL Art and Environment Prize, this association rewards a contemporary artist involved in environmental issues. The winner is designated from among ten nominated projects, selected through a call for international projects by a jury of personalities from the world of contemporary art, research, ecology and sustainable development.

The COAL Art and Environment Prize has developed into a truly international event which attracts many renowned artists and pioneers of art in relation to ecology. Each year a particular theme is honoured. In 2013, the COAL Art & Environment Prize was held under the main theme of Adaptation and mobilized the submission of approximately three hundred projects from more than 50 countries. Established in 2010 by the COAL association, the COAL Art & Environment Prize, with a monetary value of 10,000 Euros, is organized under the patronage of the French Ministries of Culture and Communication and of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, and of the French National Centre for Visual Arts. It also receives support from private partners.

For UNESCO, the exhibition is an occasion to promote among the general public ethical principles and responsibilities regarding climate change adaptation. The Organization promotes this matter, most notably through the activities developed by ots World Commision on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST). These principles and responsibilities, which call upon humanity to ensure environmental sustainability, urge human beings to consider biodiversity and the integrity of ecosystems as the very basis of life on earth. Beyond the analytical contributions of the social sciences that can help change human behaviour, there is no doubt, for UNESCO, that art can not only be a suitable emotional way to foster new attitudes towards nature and the environment, sustainability, urge human beings to consider biodiversity and the integrity of ecosystems as the very basis of life on earth. This indeed proved by the example of the COAL Association, established in France in 2008 by professionals of contemporary art, sustainable development and research to foster the emergence of a culture of ecology.
