The Young Artists show is a tradition that fills the Kunsthalle with future talent. Launched in 1939, the concept is simple: an exhibition that presents only new works by artists under 35 years of age.
Oil paintings echoing subconscious themes, recipes deconstructed into photographs, prints you can move around, folk dancing in a mobile phone video – the long-awaited Young Artists 2013 exhibition showcases the hottest things in contemporary young art today.
Organised by the Artists' Association of Finland, the Young Artists show is a tradition that fills the Kunsthalle with future talent. Launched in 1939, the concept is simple: an exhibition that presents only new works by artists under 35 years of age.
Over the years, the Young Artists exhibitions have featured work by such great names in Finnish art as Tove Jansson, Eila Hiltunen and Juhana Blomstedt, and Harro Koskinen’s Pig Messiah, a work that brought a conviction for blasphemy to the artist, was presented at the 1969 Young Artists exhibition.
The 2013 show presents works whose common thread is freedom and bold experimentation. “The predominant tone is one of wild exhilaration rather than serious commentary,” Villu Jaanisoo, chairman of the jury, sums up the character of this year’s show.
This year’s exhibition features nearly 60 works by 43 artists. They are all under 35, and their works were all completed within the past two years. A total of 350 young artists submitted work for the show.
Nearly all works on show are on sale. Tips on what to buy are available in the free Buyer’s Guide distributed in conjunction with the show.
The exhibition is produced by the Artists' Association of Finland.
