Veil

Museum Modern Art, Oxford

Veil explores the symbolic significance of the veil and veiling in contemporary culture in the work of twenty international artists.

comunicato stampa

Veil explores the symbolic significance of the veil and veiling in contemporary culture in the work of twenty international artists.

The veil has come to be viewed as synonymous with religious and cultural differences, associated with exoticised notions of the East and increasingly, a symbol of cultural oppression.

Veil invites a more complex reading of this controversial garment in terms of sexuality, the space of the body, censorship, history and the politics of representation.

The exhibition brings together photography, film, video, sculpture, and juxtaposes historic material with contemporary work.
