In respect of the last opening within the frames of the VIDEO ROOM project for 2013, the CCA is presenting a silent video from Italian artist Meris Angioletti. The video work takes the audience onto an imaginary theatre stage, on which a group of mimes creates numbers and objects through the employment of their own bodies.
The inspiration behind the film’s concept were studies regarding the mechanisms of memorization. During the studies, the artist encountered Gianni Golfera, a man of remarkable memory, whom she asked to remember a sequence of 200 digits after the decimal point in the number Pi after only hearing them once. The video’s author chose the number Pi because its boundaries are unknown, and what is interesting is that the number is subject to constant evolution, to which you can add new numbers, and yet, it still remains undefined. The method bestowed by Golfera in order to remember numbers is based on creating images in the mind, in which the numbers turn into letters, and these in turn are transformed into actions. The video shows the impressions that Golfera used to remember over 200 digits, bequeathed to mimes and demonstrated by them on stage, resulting in a pantomime which is a visual analogy of something we cannot see - meaning the mnemonic mechanism that lies behind the video piece.
The film is presented within the frames of an artistic exchange between the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, and GAMeC - Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bergamo, Italy to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of Francesco Nullo.
Meris Angioletti (born 1977) – graduate of philosophy from the “Statale” University of Milan, the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergamo, as well as the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris. The artist lives and works in Paris and Milan. She has participated in many solo exhibitions, in 2013: "While we are asleep here, we are awake somewhere else, and THUS every man is two men," Moderna Museet, The Studio, Stockholm, Sweden; Golden, Brown and Blue, SCHLEICHER / LANGE, Berlin, Germany; in the year 2012: 321, GAM - Galleria Arte Moderna, Turin, Italy; Meris Angioletti, La Galerie - Centre d'art contemporain, Noisy-Le-Sec, France; in 2010: "Premio New York," the Italian Cultural Institute, New York, USA. Group exhibitions, amongst others, "The Sieve and the Sand 3/3: The Method of Loci," Centre d'art de la Maison Populaire, Montreuil, France; 2012: :"The Imminence of Poetics," 30 Biennale in Sao Paulo, Brazil; "Soundworks," ICA, London, United Kingdom; "Coded Transmission," SCHLEICHER / LANGE, Berlin, Germany.
VIDEO ROOM is a new long term project of the Center of Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, which provides to the audience the best and newest creations of video art. Every third Monday in one of the halls of the Ujazdowski Castle, the visitors will be able to view the works of renowned Polish and international video artists. We would like for VIDEO ROOM along with Bank Pekao PROJECT ROOM (presentation of young polish art - every other Monday), and PERFORMANCE DAY to become a fixed point program for all who are interested in contemporary art.
