Leonard Nimoy's first book of photography, was published by Umbrage Editions last year, it sold out of its first printing in less than a month. It created such a stir that the Jewish Telegraphic Agency wrote, 'Nimoy is igniting an artistic debate over art and censorship that echoes the battles that swirled over Mapplethorpe, and other artists like Andres Serrano and Chris Ofili, who created controversial religious imagery.' Photographs by Leonard Nimoy
When SHEKHINA, Leonard Nimoy's first book of photography, was published by
Umbrage Editions last year, it sold out of its first printing in less than a
month. It created such a stir that the Jewish Telegraphic Agency wrote,
'Nimoy is igniting an artistic debate over art and censorship that echoes
the battles that swirled over Mapplethorpe, and other artists like Andres
Serrano and Chris Ofili, who created controversial religious imagery.' Now
Copro/Nason Gallery presents these provocative photographs in a new
exhibition, opening December 6th with an artist's reception.
Based on the concept in the Kabbalah of the female manifestation of God,
Nimoy's SHEKHINA explores the provocative and complex relationship of the
spirit and the flesh. Art Critic Donald Kuspit said, 'It is Nimoy's ability
to convey woman's many sidedness--Shekhina and Succubus at once--that makes
his photographs profound.'
SHEKHINA Photographs by Leonard Nimoy will open with an artist's reception
on Saturday evening, December 6, from 8 to 11 PM. The following Saturday
afternoon, December 13, from 2 to 4 PM, Nimoy will be available for a book
signing and to discuss how Shekhina has influenced his life and work, his
development and growth as a photographer, the link between Shekhina and the
'Live Long and Prosper' hand gesture he made world famous in Star Trek, the
controversy over what some consider the sexualization of a spiritual subject
and the photographic exploration of his spirituality and Judaism.
Reception: Saturday, December 6, 8-11pm
Book signing: Saturday, December 13, 2-4pm
