Cindy Sherman is widely acclaimed as one of the most influential artists of today.
This survey exhibition, her first in Scotland, brings together over 50 photographs that span the artist's career and includes new work shown for the first time. In addition to the exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, ten large billboards (commissioned by London Underground and the Serpentine Gallery) will be on display at the Omni building, Edinburgh, from 7 January 2004.
Sherman first came to prominence in the 1970s with her series of Film Stills - black-and-white photographs in which she parodied the characters and settings of Hollywood B-movies, combining the roles of director, photographer and leading actress. Her later photographs (in colour and often on a large scale) allude to fashion photography, art history and other types of female representation. Through her 'self-portraiture', for which she has adopted an astonishing array of disguises, Sherman explores issues of female identity and the body in our culture.
Cindy Sherman's feature film, Office Killer (1997) will be shown at the Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh, on 6 December 2003 at 6.30pm. For further details and tickets please contact the Cameo on 0131-228 4141.
