Fashion in contemporary art. In the 'fashion image worlds' of international artists, narcissistic presentation, treatment of the body, dress codes, cross-dressing and glamour are presented to great effect. Fashion as a form of masquerade which reveals and hides the identity of its wearer in an ambiguous way. Daniele Buetti, Sylvie Fleury, Luis Gisbert, Josephine Meckseper, Julian Opie and Jurgen Teller are among the artists to be invited.

Fashion as the epitome of beauty, youth, style, individuality and eroticism affects us all, influences our daily lives and is propagated by the conventional structures of the mass media. Models are superstars and the chameleon-like figures of Madonna and Cher are viewed as the real trend-setters. Designer labels are flaunted, fashion promotions creep into the public consciousness and lifestyle magazines are deemed reference works.
In contemporary art, too, these topics are presented against the background of our social environment. In the "fashion image worlds" of international artists, narcissistic presentation, treatment of the body, dress codes, cross-dressing and glamour are presented to great effect. Fashion as a form of masquerade which reveals and hides the identity of its wearer in an ambiguous way. The desired displacement of the boundaries between reality and fantasy is illuminated with the gender-specific seduction strategies of the pop culture. Sensitised by the gender debate which continues to be relevant, questions about identity, sex, desire and sexuality are taken up in the various works.
Daniele Buetti, Sylvie Fleury, Luis Gisbert, Josephine Meckseper, Julian Opie and Jürgen Teller are among the artists to be invited. A German and English bilingual catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
