Embracing the Present

Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix

Paintings, sculpture and photographs by some of the most prominent American and European artists of the last four decades will be featured in Embracing the Present: The UBS Art Collection. This traveling exhibition showcases 59 works from the outstanding UBS corporate art collection, primarily from the 1970s, '80s and '90s, that embrace a wide range of styles and offer a compelling look at contemporary art. It features work by such celebrated artists as Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter, Eric Fischl, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close, Thomas Struth, and Cindy Sherman. Seventeen of the works in the exhibition are from the group of 37 that UBS, a financial services corporation, gave to New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 2002.

This exhibition has been organized by the Portland Art Museum and is made possible by UBS. One of the foremost collections of contemporary art in the United States, The UBS Art Collection, formerly The PaineWebber Art Collection, began in 1971 with a selection of contemporary prints, including works by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein. Since then, it has blossomed to include more than 900 paintings, photographs, works on paper and sculptures by major artists of the post-World War II era.

''Many of the stellar artists included in the UBS collection now also have a home in the Museum’s burgeoning contemporary collection, such as Roy Lichtenstein, Thomas Struth, Edward Ruscha, and Cindy Sherman.''
