Art Miami 2004: A fresh perspective on Contemporary Art from Europe, Asia and the Americas
January 8 through January 11, 2004, Miami Beach, Fl
Art Miami returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center, Hall D for its
14th year Wednesday, January 7 with a gala invitation only preview, from
7:00 - 10:00 p.m. The show opens to the public Thursday, January 8, and
continues through Sunday, January 11, 2004.
120 exhibitors from 23 countries offer art enthusiasts the opportunity to
explore a cross section of modern and contemporary works, including
paintings, sculpture, photography and glass as well as conceptual works
that explore the latest trends in contemporary art. As always, quality
works in all budget categories will be on display - appealing to everyone
from the novice collector to the established patron.
New and Noteworthy
According to Art Miami director Ilana Vardy, this year fairgoers will
benefit from a more user-friendly show layout - with wider hallways and
larger booths. Attendees will also notice a marked increase in the number
of galleries presenting photographic work - running the gamut from
important works by photographic masters to more experimental expressions
of the medium from young, up and coming artists. Currents, the show's
popular cutting edge section, returns with challenging work by artists on
the verge of discovery, while Project Spaces, compelling exhibitions by
artists selected by the Art Miami team and the fair's Selection Committee,
will appeal to the visitor looking for more diversity. Other trends for
2004 include an increase in the number of galleries showing top quality
glass works, including "Games and Toys," a confrontation between Silvia
Levenson (Latin America) and Dick Marquis (North America) presented by
newcomer Caterina Tognon Arte Contemporanea of Italy. Art Miami's hallmark
as a dedicated promoter of Latin and Spanish art goes unchallenged this
year with the presentation of a wide variety of artists--both established
masters and those showing for the first time in the US--hailing from
countries such Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, the Dominican Republic,
Spain and more.
One of the most anticipated installations will be presented by COFA/claire
oliver fine art. The New York dealer will present Oasis, part of The
Islamic Project, a long-running commentary by Russian art collective AES+F
on the Western world's fear-based reactions to Islam. At Art Miami, Oasis
takes the form of a gigantic, lushly carpeted Bedouin tent encompassing
AES+F's artworks; perfect for relaxation and meditation in the center of
the show floor.
