An exhibition featuring twelve emerging artists from Portugal whose practices reflect the shifting conditions of contemporary art production over the last decade. Developed through a process of research in Portugal, the UK, Germany and the US, where many of the featured artists currently live and work, the exhibition considers the critical reception and urgency of artistic practice in Portugal, as well as within the expanded field of contemporary global realities.

In the early 1990s, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art organized several landmark group exhibitions surveying the then-current state of contemporary art in Portugal. ‘Ten Contemporaries’, curated by Alexandre Melo in 1992, provided an overview of the work of a generation of artists working in the 1980s. ‘Images for the 90s’, curated by Fernando Pernes in 1993, was seen as a reaction to the new decade, which developed in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of apartheid in South Africa and the consolidation of the neo-liberal economic model.

In the second decade of the twenty-first century, as digital communication, globalization and post-colonial realities prevail, artists are faced with new social, economic, political and technological conditions and circumstances. Portuguese artists today are part of a mobile yet also locally distinct artistic context, in which history, language and politics define a rich and common field of investigation and exploration. Critically engaging a diverse range of artistic practices, including painting, sculpture, cinema, music, theatre and performance, the artists in 12 Contemporaries: Present States propose distinct approaches within the field of contemporary art, while also suggesting a collective perspective on contemporaneity.
