Brazilian Artists and Concrete Poetry: the selection of works is representative of these "avant-garde artists of the 1960s". Contemporary an exhibition by Cildo Meireles (Rio de Janeiro, 1948), which presents large-scale installations and works conceived and produced between 1969 and 2013.
Brazilian Artists and Concrete Poetry
A selection initially compiled by E.M. de Melo e Castro, visual poet and author of numerous theoretical works on this subject, on display in Serralves. The selection of works is representative of these "avant-garde artists of the 1960s", and reflects the intense production of materials - such as books, object poems, magazines, pamphlets, brochures, postcards and posters, almost entirely obtained through exchange with works by Melo e Castro.

This exhibition by Cildo Meireles (Rio de Janeiro, 1948), which presents large-scale installations and works conceived and produced between 1969 and 2013, is a rare occasion to survey the oeuvre of one of the most relevant artists of his generation.
In the wake of Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica’s Neoconcrete experiments of the late 1950s, Meireles redefined conceptual art by freeing it from its traditional ‘verbose coating’ and giving it back ‘one of the most interesting characteristics [of art]: the attempt to seduce’. Notions of territory, value and scale, processes of exchange and relationships of power, are themes pervading the trajectory of Meireles’ art.
Intersecting drawing with sculpture and performance, most of his works offer a sensorial and cognitive experience of the world that constitutes an instrument of liberation and perceptivity to the viewer. Two works shown for the first time in this exhibition and characterized by extreme scales are an illustration of this. With Nós, formigas [Us ants] (1995/2013), located in the Park, a colony of termites is viewed from the bottom of a chamber dug in the ground, from under the crushing volume of an overhead stone.
The Study for — é — [minus is minus] (October 2013), ‘the tiniest drawing possible’, offers viewers an experience that is at once physical — faced with the minute drawing, visible only through a magnifying glass, the gigantic visitor recovers from the Lilliputian experience — and metaphysical — what specific difference does the most minute object or being have or lack?
Microscopic or gigantic, Meireles’ works are to be kept in that which, in his own words, is the ‘best place to keep an artwork[:] memory’.
