KONTAINER GALLERY is pleased to present 'DEAD HOTEL' - featuring Carolyn
Castano (LA) and Tom Ellis (London) on Saturday, January 10, 6-8pm.
In Carolyn Castano's work, decoration and artifice is used as a means to
explore gender and femininity. Through the depiction of birds, flowers and
nature, the drawings insist on creating a feminine world. Ornamentation
and decoration are used to further evoke a 'romantic' state. Embracing a
Baroque sensibility, movement and drama push decorative elements towards
abstraction, through the mixing of non-traditional art materials like
plastic rhinestones, feathers and collage with watercolor and paper.
Her work was recently included in 'International Paper' at UCLA Hammer
Museum.
Tom Ellis presents rough assemblages where he uses vignettes as source
material for atmospheric landscapes bordering on abstraction. Given a life
of their own, the models are similarly painterly, their simple homemade
construction lending them a tactile surface while evocating isolated
buildings in the landscape. Continuing to expand his fictional world of
colliding scales and forms, Ellis creates a mysterious and intriguing
world of his own.
