comunicato stampa

USSA Wellness Center by Zachary Cahill is the second preliminary Statement of the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. The exhibition opens on May 1, 2014, at 5 pm and is on view until May 4.

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 4 pm Zachary Cahill will be in conversation with curator of the 8th Berlin Biennale Juan A. Gaitán at Crash Pad c/o KW Institute of Contemporary Art, front house 1st floor.

USSA Wellness Center is part of Zachary Cahill’s ongoing project USSA 2012. Cahill considers the intercrossings between art, therapy, and the notion of “wellness” in a time of global financial collapse. More specifically, the artist examines the social effects of a recession economy and the routine condition of fatigue in his home context, the United States.

Zachary Cahill (born 1973) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, whose art work and performances have been exhibited at the Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe, Germany (ZKM); Aarhus Kunstbygning in Aarhus, Denmark; TONYS, New York; Princeton University; and Threewalls, Chicago, amongst others. His USSA Wellness Center project is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Smart Museum of Art, Chicago.

In 2012, he participated in The Retreat: A Position of dOCUMENTA (13), a residency at the Banff Centre. Since 2007, Cahill has been associated with Our Literal Speed.

His writings have appeared in many exhibition catalogs, as well as Mousse Magazine, the Journal of Visual Culture, the journal RETHINKING MARXISM, and Shifter Magazine. Cahill is also a regular contributor to Artforum.com.

The musician André Vida has conceived a six act cycle of Have you appreciated a tree today? by Julius Vida for a performance in the courtyard of KW at the evening of the opening.

Berlin-based American composer and saxophonist André Vida has performed widely as a soloist and has collaborated with a diverse group of artists, including Anthony Braxton, Kevin Blechdom, Tarek Atoui, Hildur Gudnadottir, Nico Dockx, and Jamie Lidell. He has worked closely with Anri Sala on multi-media installations at the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Roman Amphitheater in Arles, and the Museum of Modern Art in Louisiana, Denmark. Vida has been invited to create works focused on the medium and materiality of scoring for The Tri-Centric Foundation, Global Art Forum 7, the 8th Berlin Biennale, Eyebeam, and the European Sax Ensemble. These works include explorations of interactivity, animation, lighting, and clothing design as elements of a compositional system that refocuses the physicality and performance.

The performance will be followed by a DJ set hosted by Café Bravo.
