The third edition of the International Art Fair brings to the city 190 of the world's leading contemporary galleries from across the globe, alongside critically acclaimed Projects, Talks, Sounds and Education programs. Frieze Projects and Frieze Sounds will once again be curated by Cecilia Alemani, presenting ambitious new work in response to the fair's Randall's Island location.
Frieze New York will return to Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan from May 9 to 12, 2014. The third edition of the New York fair will feature over 190 of the world’s leading contemporary galleries, with 53 participants from the fair’s host city. For the third consecutive year Frieze New York is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.
Housed in a distinct serpentine structure overlooking the East River, Frieze New York aims to create the best art fair experience for galleries and visitors alike, with an innovative design and natural light. The 2014 fair brings to the city the most exciting contemporary galleries from across the globe, alongside critically acclaimed Projects, Talks, Sounds and Education programs.
Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp commented on the prospect of the third edition: ‘We want the fair to make a positive contribution to New York and the response from New York galleries this year, from the smallest to the most established, has been better than ever. Frieze New York brings together the most energetic galleries working today, both local and international, and by introducing a limited number of subsidized tickets for students we hope to make that energy accessible to all.’
Participating galleries new and returning to the main section of the fair this year include: Gladstone Gallery, New York; kurimanzutto, Mexico City; Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo; and The Box, Los Angeles. This year sees a new advisor to Frame, the section of the fair dedicated to solo presentations of work by galleries under eight years old. Raphael Gygax, curator at Migros Museum, Zurich, has joined New York-based curator Tim Saltarelli on the Frame gallery selection for 2014. This year Frame will include a number of artists of different generations making it a place to discover a diverse range of new work.
Raphael Gygax said of his new position: ‘Since the introduction of Frame was made at Frieze, I have discovered many great, young – and sometimes also old – positions and galleries with ambitious fresh programs. I feel veryprivileged to be part of it and to be able to contribute my experience as an institutional curator to this dynamic section of the fair.’ Focus is a section of the fair dedicated to galleries founded in or after 2003. These galleries bring to the fair curated projects and solo stands specially conceived for Frieze New York and include some of the most forward- thinking galleries working today.
Frieze Projects and Frieze Sounds will once again be curated by Cecilia Alemani, presenting ambitious new work in response to the fair’s Randall’s Island location. The artists participating in the Frieze Projects program at Frieze New York this year are: Darren Bader, Eduardo Basualdo, Eva Kotátková, Marie Lorenz, Koki Tanaka and Naama Tsabar. The program will also feature a special tribute to Allen Ruppersberg’s Al’s Grand Hotel, originally realized in 1971 at 7175 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. The artists have been invited to conceive site-specific works that take their inspiration from the location of Randall’s Island and in particular its history as a place dedicated to leisure and recreational activities. Located both inside and outside the fair, the seven projects aim to short circuit the usual activities that take place on the island and at Frieze New York. As a whole, the projects envision new temporary spaces for reflection on the role and use of free time in our society.
