Founded in 2002, New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) collective of professionals working with contemporary art. Our mission is to create an open flow of information, support, and collaboration within our field and to develop a stronger sense of community among our constituency. We believe that the adversarial approach to exhibiting and selling art has run its course. We believe that change can be achieved through fostering constructive thought and dialogue between various points in the art industry from large galleries to small spaces, non-profit and commercial alike. Through support and encouragement, we facilitate strong and meaningful relationships between our members working with new contemporary and emerging art; while enhancing the public’s interaction with contemporary art.

Our international group of members includes both galleries (including non-profit spaces) and individuals (art professionals, independent curators, and established gallery directors). The various perspectives and ideas offered by our diverse roster creates a network which, at its most basic, is a resource which people could contribute to and take as much (or as little) as they are inclined. We believe in a spirit of friendly competition and the power of working collectively to gain access to resources and to provide services to artists and the public that we could not as individuals. The benefits for some may be a matter of business, for others a source of intellectual or aesthetic stimulation.

To date, our initiatives have succeeded on two fronts: making the contemporary arts more accessible for the general public, and creating opportunities that nurture the growth of emerging artists, curators, and galleries. Our events have included: artist talks/gallery walks with critics and curators; benefits in support of charitable institutions; members-only seminars to stimulate dedication and ethics in our profession; panel discussions; and our annual art fairs, which are held in April, May and December are free and open to the public.

The New Art Dealers Alliance is a not-for-profit organization, registered in the State of New York. Membership is by invitation only, following nomination by an existing member and approval by the Board.

Special Projects

Phaidon presents Beta-Local and MOCAD

Exploring the publication of Art Cities of the Future, Phaidon will highlight the parallel art scenes of San Juan, Puerto Rico and Detroit, Michigan. Local non-profits Beta-Local and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) will present individual, interactive project spaces that showcase the creative communities that are booming in both cities despite economic uncertainties. Founded in 1923, Phaidon is the world’s premier publisher of books on the creative arts.

Shoot the Lobster at Pier 36

Shoot the Lobster will present a group exhibition and collaborative installation on view in a 1964 black Ford Galaxie 500 located outside of Pier 36. The site-specific installation will feature will feature the work of Lena Henke/Marie Karlberg – M/L Artspace, Eli Ping, Jennie Jeun Lee, Ryan Foerster, Justin Lieberman, Denise Kupferschmidt, Eddie Martinez, Jeffrey Joyal, Bradley Kronz, Win McCarthy, and Nicholas Buffon, with more to be announced. Select Shoot the Lobster merchandise – including shirts, mugs, and backpacks – will be available for purchase. On view for the duration of the fair in the parking lot of Pier 36.

Gallerist Tours

Join Gallerist’s award-winning editors, Sarah Douglas (New York Observer Culture Editor) and Andrew Russeth, for a tour of NADA New York. Each hour-long tour will provide commentary on a selection of exhibitors’ booths and artists on view. For the seasoned collector and casual art fair-goer alike, the tours offer a one-of-a-kind experience of the 2014 fair and a unique opportunity to hear from two of New York’s most respected arts writers. Gallerist is the leading news site for the global art world, supplying collectors, gallery owners, curators, artists, and contemporary art followers with the most complete coverage of breaking news, as well as art criticism and trends impacting the art market.

Contemporary Poetry

Saturday, May 10, 12–6PM

NADA is pleased to present Contemporary Poetry, a marthon reading by 30 emerging and recognized New York based poets curated by Sam Gordon. The program will be held on Saturday, May 10th, 12–6pm at NADA New York in the upstairs Tacombi Lounge

When Frank O’Hara wrote “Having a Coke with You,” poetry and painting walked hand in hand through the streets of New York. Contemporary Poetry collects a group of poets today, connected by varying degrees, once again engaged with artists in moments of dialogue and exchange.

The series of readings will be accompanied by a Contemporary Poetry zine scheduled to launch May 9 at Printed Matter at NADA New York. The publication will feature work from presenting poets and more.

El Local Club

Sunday, May 11, 2PM

Independent Curators International (ICI), in partnership with Beta-Local, present El Local Club, a conversation about the influences of Caribbean in artistic practice and production. Taking as a point of departure Radamés “Juni” Figueroa’s Tree House — Club House, 2013, a sculpture and social platform built in the tropical forest of Naguabo, Puerto Rico; Stefan Benchoam, Co-director, Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City; Pablo Guardiola, Co-director, Beta-Local, San Juan; and Radamés “Juni” Figueroa, artist, San Juan, will discuss generosity as a tool, “tropical” strategies and methodologies, site specificity, networks of influence, and the ways of working in Puerto Rico. El Local Club has been made possible, in part, by the support of Phaidon.

Artadia NADA Award

Partnering for the fourth season, Artadia and NADA will award an exceptional artist exhibiting at NADA an unstrestricted $4,000 cash prize and all lifetime privileges of the Artadia Awards program. A jury of two, internationally prominent curators will walk through the fair on opening day and select the artist from the number of galleries Award winner will be announced on Saturday, May 10th. The Artadia NADA Award is generously funded by Artadia and NADA.

LittleCollector

Workshops: Saturday, May 10, 11:30AM, $20 and Sunday, May 11, 11:30AM, $20
Tours: Sunday, May 11 at 1PM, free with advanced RSVP

LittleCollector will return with fun-filled workshops and tours to provide a discovery element to the fair for younger attendees. Artist-led workshops by Amy Stevens and Shelter Serra explore the mediums of photography and paint. Tours with art education experts will inspire the next generation of artists, and introduce terms of medium, scale, narrative, symmetry, and genre within a fair setting.
