How does the inside of trees sound?

Russian artist Tviga Vasilyeva would like to provide an answer to this question with the interactive video installation Vanished Forest. The work enables visitors to go on an interactive trip into an already bygone forest and to experience this in an initially unusual dimension: the acoustic dimension. For this purpose Vasilyeva worked in a part of the “blessed” forest in the Novgorod region, within the Volday State Reserve in northwest Russia, and at the same time one of the oldest primeval forests in Europe. She equipped the trees, which were already released for logging, with contact microphones, recorded the sounds of the inner circulation and amplified these sounds 250-fold. Every one of the trees encapsulates an individual, very different world of sound which is made perceivable for humans.

In the installation visitors can select the individual trees on the video projection by means of a touchscreen, and they themselves decide which tree shall be heard. Yet the artist is not merely concerned with the acoustic effect. Vasilyeva would like to draw attention to the eco-politically contentious logging of the ancient forest which is gradually vanishing. Plans for reforestation do not exist in the part in which the recordings for Vanished Forest were created.

Via the trees individualised on the sound level and the interactive video technology she attempts to engender an unprecedented sensory perception and to evoke an environmental awareness among the viewers. The acoustic level becomes an interface between the real problem of the destruction of nature and the immaterial remnants of living entities here.

Moreover, Vasilyeva shifts her work to a level in which the individual’s self-perception plays a role within the environment: “Through the perception of inner vibrations in these trees one could remember that the world and oneself are vanishing.” (Vasilyeva)

The works by artist Tviga Vasilyeva focus on the venues of her art itself. Through interdisciplinary approaches and cooperation with various organisations and individuals she creates works which relate to the exploration of landscape, nature and environment. In her artistic works Vasilyeva aims to develop awareness for the increasingly progressive disappearance of forests and to place the viewer in an emotional state of sadness and loss. With technical resources such as sound, video and sculpture she attempts to preserve the declining areas and at the same time enables viewers to experience this phenomenon in another manner as merely visual. During the last three years she has dealt with the logging of forest areas in Russia and Finland.
Tviga Vasilyeva studied in Finland, Russia and England, and completed the course of study in photography at the University for Creative Arts (Farnham, Great Britain) in 2010. Among other things, her works have been exhibited in London (Great Britain), Brighton (Great Britain), New York (USA), Stockholm (Sweden) and Moscow (Russia). She lives and works in Moscow.
