comunicato stampa

On June 18, 2014, Kunsthalle Basel will open the first solo exhibition of the artist duo Julia Rometti (1975 Nice, France) and Victor Costales (1974 Minsk, Belarus) in Switzerland.

Julia Rometti and Victor Costales treat nature as a space for inscription of philosophical and literary narratives in which natural forms become the agents. In their sculptural installations the artists combine natural objects like vulcanic rocks and Amazonian seeds with industrial material like concrete floor tiles bearing scientific patterns or transform these natural materials into domestic objects like curtains.
Furthermore they make use of appropriated and own photographs and films as well as of literary and scientific essays to refer to specific topics.

The narratives thus created deal with the idea of cultural transfer taking shape in different appearances, from abstract signs to symbolic materialisation in objects or images, including the creation of semi-factual and semi-fictional characters und concepts.

The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Martin Hatebur and Isaac Dreyfus-Bernheim Stiftung
