An exhibition and research project along the motorway A 40 from Duisburg to Dortmund

Over the years, an idiosyncratic urban space has evolved in the shadow of the grand road that mirrors, connects and visualizes the precarious characteristics of the Ruhr Area like no other location. Due to the merging of the cities in the Ruhr Area, the problematic infrastructural system A 40 is suddenly being transformed into the boulevard of the Cultural Metropolis Ruhr.

B1|A40 has explored this urban space since 2010 within an interdisciplinary dialog with artists, urban planners, architects, and scientists. The project focusses on the strategies of individual appropriations of spaces, the cultural heterogeneity of landscape and the population’s limitless innovative potential.

In 2014, new places enter the focus: the complex area between the motorway, farms, and metro stations around the U18 station Eichbaum in Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, the cultural interface between church, brothel, S&M club, and allotments around the slaughterhouse Bochum, precarious housing locations for instance in Essen-Frillendorf, the surrounding of idyllic village views and the motorway under the Schnettkerbrücke in Dortmund, and the motorway junction Kaiserberg as a vernacular, autoproductive landscape.

B1|A40 The Beauty of The Grand Road, as in 2010 curated by project author Markus Ambach (MAP), invites to continue thinking about and telling the narrative of the grand road – as the story of a region that re-defines itself every day.

Various formats lead though this multifarious space. Artistic works are combined with local ideas and the projects of people on site. Hiking trails, bus tours and other guided tours link the different elements and form a unique choreography between landscape, art, and everyday culture. Culinary pleasures, concerts, theater performances, and lectures accompany the exhibition.

Those who stop and look around can discover a landscape that invents itself anew each day—unique, resistant, and endlessly creative.

Urbane Künste Ruhr is the new art organization in the cultural metropolis Ruhr. Based on the unique urban landscape of the Ruhr Area, we together with artists, networks, and cultural institutions investigate the core of urbanity. Under the artistic direction of Katja Aßmann, Urbane Künste Ruhr develops and realizes projects that define the design of cities in a new way – always on-site and together with the people living here. Urbane Künste Ruhr risks a new perspective on the Ruhr Area, the city in general, and the possibilities of art.
