Visual artist, stage designer or director? Hans Op de Beeck cannot be limited to a single genre. He is a virtuoso in all art forms and creates scenarios that draw the observer into the action. For the exhibition in Sammlung Goetz, he developed a local production using his own holdings in the collection. Like pearls on a string, these unfold into an entire story as the viewer proceeds through the individual rooms. Because Op de Beeck provides space for a wide range of associations, the plot is consciously left open. The viewer can immerse himself into these and add his own experiences and memories.

The artist, born in 1969 in Brussels, became known for his walk-in atmospheric environments. “I like it when viewers have their own individual physical experiences, for example when proportions are skewed,” he explained in an interview. Ingvild Goetz has collected all types of the artist’s work, in all of its media diversity. The exhibition provides an overview of Op de Beeck’s artwork over the last 15 years, including video installations from the 1990s, sculptures and works on paper and his large environments. His still lifes and interiors, which enter into dialogue with the architecture of the building – once planned as a private museum – form a main focus of the exhibition.
